    Hey NBR folks,

Sorry for cluttering your board with another thread about this notebook, but I'm about to buy and would like to be absolutely sure on a few things.

    1) Can I get the P9600 CPU now, and then later upgraded to a a quadcore (probably when the cooling issues are solved and faster clockspeeds area available for cheaper). If so, how is this done? Would I be able to send it back to Sager or XoticPC and pay for the upgrade?

    2) Is the WSXGA+ really better for long-term performance (as compared to the higher res screen). I do like higher resolutions, but I intend to make this laptop last several years (3-4), with an upgrade or two.

    3) I have become a little concerned with some of the overheating issues that seem to be appearing on the forums. Are there knwon issues for someone using stock speeds on the P9600 with a 7200 rpm 320gb hdd? I do appreciate the power of this rig, but I don't intend to get crysis or push the benchmarking programs to the limit.

    1. Yes
    2. Not substantially, people generally recommend the glossy screen due to most people enjoying glossy screens more.
    3. Those issues seem to have disappeared in the NP8662, you shouldn't have issues with it.

I just ordered my np8662 just yesterday and i plan on using for 3-4 years as well so i went with the p9600 and will look to upgrade if i have to. I personally think the wxsga+ is better. And i've read that most of the heating issues were resolved like atheist had said. Good luck on your decision. I hope this notebook is as good as everyone said it would be.

Ok, so if the CPU can be upgraded, how hard of a process is it? Would it be something I would have to do myself, or could the laptop be sent to safer or xoticpc?

The only issue I have with the NP8662 is the HD temps. It is way too high. I installed the latest drivers and disable some things in the HD and the temps are over 55C idle..even using a cryo lx. I will try to see if I can buy a NP8662 back panel and make holes around the HD area like some suggest so there is air flowing

though i do not have a 8662, i have helped others replace cpus. It is just as simple as a desktop cpu replacement if not a tad simpler (being that the heatsink is not huge like a desktop) Anyway here are the steps
    1)open back panel
    2)unscrew heatsink 4-7 screws
3)unscrew cpu locking mechanism screw (right nest to cpu)
    4)remove cpu
    5)put new cpu in
    6)apply thermal paste
    7) re screw locking mechanism
    8)re screw in heatsink
    9) close back panel
    10) enjoy (do not skip!!)

Yeah, what Blueman101 said. It's that simple for the NP8662.

I wish I could say the same for my friend's laptop. He had an old Compaq from 2004 that needed half the chassis removed before I could even see the CPU as well as blankets of dust and crushed Pringles caked all over the fan and heatsink.

Pringles?! My goodness. The manufacturer's workers must have been celebrating the 1,000,000th Compaq made.

It is easy, but you left out that you have to remove the fan first, and that both sides of the heatsink (CPU/GPU) must be unscrewed and removed as one unit. Still, it's simple.

Hi, i'm going to upgrade my cpu.

for the gpu heatsink and the combined heatsink(is it), the middle part inbetween the cpu & gpu , i'm facing difficulty removing it.

there're 2 long and 4 small screws on the gpu. do I have to remove all? I tried and the gpu heatsink still wouldnt move.

    appreciate assistance on this. Thanks!

You only need to remove the four smaller screws on the GPU and the screws on the CPU to remove the one piece heatsink. Tug on the GPU cold plate a bit to get it loose as the thermal paste may be holding it down a bit.
