Now occasionally I am scrolling with the mouse and when I move the mouse off that spot the little scroll icon is still left there on the screen. Known facts:

    1. It has only happened when using Firefox so far, but I have Firefox on all my Win 7 machines and I have never, ever seen this before.
    2. The icon is there even when Firefox is minimized. It appears on top of the desktop and all other programs tried.
    3. The icon appears "busy" in that, when I place the mouse on top of the frozen icon, the busy ball is there spinning.
    4. I have G-sync off as a result of resolving the last strange behavior on this laptop!

Is this a mouse driver problem, an Invidia problem or an OS issue? How can I stop this from happening again. The only way I can get rid of these things frozen on my screen is to restart.

Have you tried updating Firefox, as well as any drivers or utilities for your mouse? If you are using a wireless mouse, have you tried replacing the batteries (probably not the issue, but I've had a mouse in the past do odd things if the batteries were almost dead).

Firefox and the drivers are up to date and it just happened again.

Does anyone know which process I should look at that might show busy so that I can stop this without having to reboot all the time?

Something similar happened to me in chrome, on my desktop.
It fixed itself after I cleaned the system of chrome stuff and reinstalled. But I having other issues with chrome itself as well.

I found the process to kill in order to make the stuck bits go away, though it would still be nice to figure out how to prevent them in the first place. There seems to be no adverse effect from killing this one.

That's the synaptics touchpad, so you might loose things like gestures without it running.

Why am I not surprised that the TouchPad driver is the issue?

Havent really had issues with the Synaptics drivers yet. Might want to uninstall and reinstall the driver once.

Agreed, and maybe even consider another version (whether that means rolling back or updating).
