I have a 9262 with a Yorkfield Q9650 Core 2 Quad (3ghz). It also has SLI and 3 HDDs in RAID 0.
I'm considering buying an additional laptop, also with SLI and RAID 0, but the new system comes with Penryn CPUs QX9300 Quad (2.66ghz) or X9100 DUO (2.93ghz).
Questions:
CPU power is important to me and I need to figure out if the Penryns are a show-stopper or not.
- Besides clock speeds and power requirements, what are the key differences between Yorkfield desktop CPUs and Penryn laptop CPUs?
- Will I notice a drop in raw CPU computing power going to a Penryn from a Yorkfield?
- Will the Penryns run SLI and RAID as well as Yorkfields?
- I play a game that requires lots of CPU power (as well as GPU power), will the Penryns run it and SLI and RAID as well as Yorkfield?
Thanks in advance.

well what do you want to run so we can figure this out?
-
Everything, really. Work apps, Excel, Access, MS Office, video games (FPS, MMOs, etc.,), media editing (photo, video, sound).

what clock speed you want me at and do you want to try wprime?
-
I'm pretty sure they are both penryns.

here's mines
-
But I thought the 9650 was yorkfield and the 9300 was monteniva, but I might be wrong as well. -
-
Mine's Yorkfield- QX9300.
Though I'm stuck at 2.53GHz. -
qx9650 yorkfield
-
The x9100's stock speed is 3.06ghz. If the game/programs can use the quadcore I would go with the qx9300.
-

i'm penryn. as cpu-z stated above. that's weird. k9hydr4 can you use cpu-z and make sure.
-
Why is it so hard to believe? Cost cutting measures means streamlining process(pentium vs celeron anyone?) shared components, or variations on the same platform- -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
what i mean is that is there two types of qx9300. because in my previous post on the first page if you look at mu cpu it says penryn. but you say that yours is yorkfield. unless you are talking about the qx9650.
-
-
Your guess is as good as mine-
Anyone here care to google this info, or well read on intel's family of processors? -
The Q9650 is yorkfield, the QX9300 is penryn. From the specs, the penryn is slower in cpu speed and fsb (1066 vs 1333 in yorkfield). So I would suspect that the Q9650 would be faster.

acutully. using a bios overclock. i am at 3.2ghz and my fsb raised to 1333. so it depends on the notebook he is thinking about purchhasing.

Dell M4400 cannot take Quadro 2700/3700M
-
lol did anybody read the first post, I'm interested at equal clock would a desktop quad perform better than a mobile quad
-
Here you go-
-
Try new version CPU-Z.
-
I'll hunt down these new versions and see-
It's amazing both programs are consistently wrong-
I guess Everest is using CPU-Z engine?
UPDATE: Ok, I downloaded 1.5.1 CPU-Z.
It's Penryn-- -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
yeah i have the same version for cpu-z.
-
In terms of SLI and RAID, the CPU has no effect on those.

QX9300 is nothing more than 2x T9400... it's definitely Penryn. Now the architectural difference? Just find a clock for clock benchmark to compare. There's a desktop yorkfield at 2.53 isn't there?
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
acutally i thought it was two p9500's or one t9400 and one p9500. both with unlocked multipliers.
-
Wolfdale is to Yorksfield as Penryn is to Penryn QC... and there happens to be a match, the E8200 and my beloved P9600 <.< I'll see if I can find some benches
Actually this is pointless. According to Anandtech the core is identical (penryn and wolfsdale). Wolfsdale has a faster FSB, but it also has a higher TDP. And Yorksfield is nothing more than 2 Wolfdale dies on one module. -
Also, what is the difference in the supporting chipset platforms? -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
i asked him if he wants to run some programs at his clock speeds and we can find out but i didn't get a response. i can set my multiplier to 11.5(3.06ghz)
-
They have the same features, like SSE4 instructions. All the info can be found here. Clock for clock, you won't find a difference besides the FSB.

i don't get your question either. lol. but the cpu can affect sli/crossfire performance.

pm45 ok i'll go to 3.06ghz.
wprime
both 32m and 1024m
i'm restarting and running. brb -

Dondadah, your CPU is the Q9300 desktop Yorkfield, not the QX9300 mobile Penryn. I need a comparison with the latter (please refer to the original thread title
). Thanks anyway.
Can anyone else confirm/dispute that there is no difference between Yorkfields and Penryns other than FSB speeds? -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
no i have a qx9300. cpu-z and cpuid reads it wrong as a intel core 2 extreme q9300. there is no such thing as a q9300. such google. pluss didn't you see the multiplies
increase from 6-9.5 and i am at 11.5. only extreme. or pinmodded cpu's
so yeah i have a qx9300. what's your results. -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
also about the yorkfiled and peyrenn. it is also readig it wrong. check the sager thread named 'performance difference between qx9300 vs q9000'. you will diferent versions of the same program reading the qx9300 wrong.
-
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
also look at my fsb it is at 1066. yorkfield is at 1333.
-
=Travesty;4880342]Dondadah, your CPU is the Q9300 desktop Yorkfield, not the QX9300 mobile Penryn.
gonna have to say your wrong there.
I need a comparison with the latter (please refer to the original thread title).
you sure you know what a qx9300 is?

thanks john on treo 800w so it's really hard to post links. but later on i will do some more cpu intesive task to see how it performs.
john why don't you throw up some stuff? -
