Nice vids but they accidentally named them wrong, should be other way around.
-
Onkyo audio huh. Let's see if those are a major improvement.
-
-
Why do these sound like somebody is vacuuming in the background?
-
I'm hoping for a more extensive look, like what XoticPC did with the NP8150 (long, two-part videos on youtube)
-
We'll see when they open in a few hours, I suppose they will, and I will get the links and post them in the OP. -
-
-
It seems ProStar got their videos mixed up. The P170EM video shows the P150EM and vice versa. -
I am sorry to say this , maybe I am not a Sager/clevo fan.
Don't you think the ghetto Chinese looking workstation/warehouse look more interesting than the computer? You see their tools and boxes of stuff in behind !
Edit: If you check their previous video, they used to film it in their home office instead of the workstation. -
-
Yeah that P150EM is pretty much confirmed a blow dryer
-
Seriously, stop with the exaggerations, your opinion has been duly noted by everyone on the forums.
You simply can't expect a 15" with the top end video card to be whisper quiet, if you are looking for such, wait for Kepler.
It will let its fans' existence when under load, it is doing its job.
Seriously, stop.

Let's put this "sound levels" issue to rest once and for all.
First, for perspective, let's look at the Table of sound levels at Table chart sound pressure levels SPL level sound pressure and sound intensity ratio calculation comparison loudness decibel dB scale ratio factor unit examples - sengpielaudio Sengpiel Berlin
Note that:
Quiet bedroom at night = 30 dB
Quiet library = 40 dB
Average home = 50 dB
Conversational speech = 60 dB
Vacuum cleaner = 70 dB
Picture #1 - Sager NP9150 using WordPad = 30 dB.
So, no worries in the library or class.
Picture #2 - Sager NP9150 running Furmark full bore - one foot away from keyboard = 53 dB.
Barely above the ambient sound level in a quiet home. At 3 feet away it is barely audible.
Picture #3 - Sager NP9150 running Furmark full bore - right at the keyboard = 57 dB.
Less than conversational speech...more like a whisper, and nowhere near a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer...much less the aforementioned jet airplane. -
Paladin, thanks for running those tests. Hopefully this will dispel the concern. -
-
Here's another review.
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1897877
I have read a review from elsewhere that has reviewed their 'test unit' and it was apparently quite loud from the fans. I am not sure how that could be because this
machine is so incredibly quiet particularly on idle I had to double check the fans were even working. After letting it warm up a bit with some games and under load of
course the fan speed boosted up quite a bit and it was the usual gaming laptop fan noise. It is still noticeably quieter than the P150HM (old model). -
-
Google Translate
Up until this point, many people here claimed that there must have been something defective with the German site's unit or that they conducted their test wrong, but if these dB values are correct, the issue is no longer whether or not the German review is accurate, but whether or not noise levels of 50 dB+ would be burdensome to a user. People are going to have different opinions here depending on their situation.
Obviously, jet engines and hair dryers are exaggerations, but it seems evident that tolerable noise levels are very subjective. The loudest computer I have access to reaches levels of exactly 50 dB under load with the measuring device right on the keyboard. My personal laptop reaches about 47 dB under load, also at the keyboard. I would say that these levels are definitely not acceptable for school situations and is questionable for dorm living. The fact that the P150EM is even louder than the machines I've tested is worth some concern. For regular home usage though, this likely won't be an issue. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Those levels are with FURMARK running full bore!! If you are doing that in school situations then you should get out of class or the library.
Just running WordPad, or Word, it is 30 dB. A quiet library is 40 dB.
As for the dorm, it is barely over the ambient sound in a quiet home, and under well under normal conversation at just 1 foot away...and that...AGAIN...is running FURMARK AT FULL BORE...which is stressing a lot harder than any game.
So, there isn't much dispute about what the dB levels are, the dispute is about what is acceptable and what is not. So if you find that 53 dB is unacceptable 1 foot away, and virtually inaudible at 5 or 6 feet away, then you are certainly entitled to that opinion, but you will be in a very small minority. If your roommate can't sleep, then get a new roommate.
And, since you don't identify what laptops you have tested, we can only assume they do not have anywhere near the power of the Sager NP9150. -
I wasn't aware of how demanding FURMARK was. 30 dB is actually very quiet. It's only concerning because computers seem to have some variability with noise levels, like getting louder on bootup and hard drive access.
-
One hot laptop to rule them all -
Questions to resellers : Do the EM models also have the Fn+1 crazy-fan mode?
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
^--^
No they don't have that function. -
Fn+1 was great for benching. -
-
Then you go on to say that 57dB is like whisper! 57dB is in the range of a loud refrigerator running, an electric shaving machine, a dishwasher, not a whisper. A whisper is in the range of 30dB.
If you think that you can game in your dorm room at night without disturbing others, your roommates are very tolerant. Even at 40dB it is very audible in a quiet room. An office, or a library for that matter is not very quiet.
Here is comparison that let's you hear some different sounds at different dB:
http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Technical/Sounds/decible4.swf
Edit: Read some other reviews on notebookcheck to see what they feel are tolerable levels, and what they think is LOUD. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
So, show us your decibel meter where your laptop is running at 45 dB? If you can hear it in the next room with the door closed I can assure you it is running at over 60 dB.
Running FURMARK at full bore the Sager NP9150, in a quiet room, cannot be heard at all at about 5~6 feet away, much less in the next room with the door closed. To suggest otherwise is simply not true.
Your comparison of different sounds link is totally worthless because all I have to do is turn my volume up or down to change the sound level of any of the sounds there...it is totally meaningless. -
Donald the comments on the P170 video mentions 2 hour battery life, I thought OPtimus would greatly extend the life for mundane tasks.
BTW I have a pristene G73JH do you take trade ins? -
According to this: Review Deviltech Devil 9700 DTX (W860CU) Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
the w860cu maxes out at 71 degrees, and is still under 50 dB... These are just my poersonal experiences though, and a bit beside the point.
Still, your claim that 57dB isn't audible at 5 feet away is misleading. If a conversation (60 dB in your chart) is barely audible at 5 feet, you must be hard of hearing and a close-talker. -
-
I shouldn't have provided that anecdote, as it's really not relevant.
-
-
I don't know why the noise issue is being stressed on so much,
I suppose people aren't going to play games in the library so it won't be a problem- day to day tasks are very quiet with the occasional fan whirring up and down(which was fixed by EC update).
When gaming, it also isn't enough to wake up or bother your sleeping roommate - what will bother him more are the clicking of the mouse, the pounding on the keyboard when losing, and anguished screams of frustration when things don't go our way.
Seriously guys, these machines do their stuff and are very efficient at it too, just don't expect ultrabook-like quietness, these things pack serious punch and we all know a bit of fan noise comes with power.
Let's wait for the first people to receive their machines to comment on the fan noise. -
Well, I highly doubt it is anything above 50 dB at full load (furmark/occt/bf3). What I described above was what it sounded like when it was new.
There are three separate reviews of my unit on notebookcheck, with three different GPU's:
280m: Review Deviltech Devil 9700 DTX (W860CU) Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
5870m: Review Deviltech Devil 9700 DTX (ATI HD 5870) Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
460m: Review Schenker XMG P500 PRO Gaming Notebook - Notebookcheck.net Reviews
Only in the last review do they manage to push it above 50 dB. I don't see why my machine, when it was new, would be any louder than this.
My system is old, but I regularly clean the insides of it. To get even more cooling (and less noise) I am running it on a CM U2 notebook cooler with the backpanel removed. My machine has never been quieter and cooler then now, but it is still very audible during intense tasks and gaming. It is certainly audible feet five away, even when it is idling.
Anyways, I just felt that Donald's post was a bit over the top. It made it sound like these notebooks are very quiet, barely audible at load, but I think anybody that has owned a Clevo will tell you that is far from the case. -

How come the videos became private?...i can't watch it anymore?
-
I just got my hands on one and holy crap!
So I turned it on and all hell broke loose. The fans immediately started screaming and providing enough thrust to propel the computer around my apartment like a crazy bird. It took me about 10 minutes before I finally caught the sucker, but by then my ears were bleeding, the apartment was a wreck, and every car alarm on my block was going off. Even my deaf dog heard it.
I tethered the computer to my couch and have been using double hearing protection and this seems to be working well.
Edit: I ran a benchmark, which caused the fans to feverishly blaze away and the computer broke free of its tether and launched itself right through my front window. Unfortunately, it has Optimus and the battery is going to last longer so who knows how far it's going to fly. -
-
this is what happened to mine:
yeah, and what happened to the ProStar Videos? Was about to see exactly how much my P150EM config would be with their coupon in their video description. -

Hi, Ryan,
Can you remove the old video links from youtube.com.
We have prepared better videos, so you can see the backlit keyboard better. I am not sure I can post an youtube link or not. But you can find the new videos for Prostar/Clevo P270WM, P170EM, and P150EM now.
Let me know if it is O.K. for me to post the video links. -
EDIT: nope i guess not D:
EDIT 2: But damn, that's a hot backlit keyboard. definitely an improvement from the old video at least. -
Here are the links to Prostars videos.
