these temperatures are really scaring me.
i was willing to drop 2k+ on a laptop cause i figured it would get me through my last 2 years of college without any performance struggles and such...
but with temperature readings(i know theres only like 1 or 2 out there and that the thing isn't like at the point of melting overheating..but its alarmingly high and above norms.), im starting to doubt how my np8660 will hold up through heavy use.
If i stick with my np8660, it seems like a notebook cooler will be a necessity, not an accessory. which again makes me wonder if i should spend lots of money on a laptop that can hardly cool itself..
ahhh... starting to doubt, anyone want to re insure me that im just being paranoid haha?

I'd wait and see if some more people report the same issue. I'm really hoping it's an isolated case since I get mine tomorrow.

You're being paranoid. Its only one incident. Right now, if you want to think about it like that, narrow mindedly, two people have gotten the laptop, one with normal heat and one with terrible heat.

There is a 50/50 chance that the laptop you receive will be like Ad@m's (which I realize, he is taking pictures of ON THE GROUND....FOR SHAME ).

Calm yourself down before you do something you'll regret.

Too many of you guys on this forum have no faith in your purchases. (which is why I'm guessing so many jumped ship on orders that are now the most desired on this forum)

Don't you trust if the laptop is not to your desires you can send it back for a refund?

I posted on the Kobalt forum about this and Andrew@Kobalt said that they haven't seen any temperature problems during testing at it is likely to be a faulty drive so I wouldn't cancel yet... and even if your machine is faulty, there I believe you can return it within 31 days for a refund if you are not satisfied :)

don't worry dude, just wait a little longer for more of the laptops to be received by buyers and wait for more reviews to start coming out; there's not enough data out yet for us to be making conclusions about the 8660 yet!

Not necessarily; however, if you want to wait a little longer to see how things play out before being committed to spending the money on your system, you might talk with your reseller to see if you can defer your order for a week or so - i.e., let a certain number of other orders in the pipeline go ahead of yours - so that more early adopters can get their systems and test them for heat problems.

Actually if you bought from XOTICPC (and I think this goes for Powernotebooks and Sager also), it's only the shipping fees back and forth. No restocking fee (no Alienware-type rip-off).

Does anyone know what materials are the GPU made of? Then we can search for melting point of the materials, and find out whether it is a problem or not.

Nah. At those temperatures it's going to sublimate directly into carbon monoxide gas.

Mikel is right sublime is to convert from solid to gas without the liquid phase, but this need to be done under lower pressure. See phase diagram on wiki or google it.

Not always the case. Look at iodine or carbon dioxide. Both can sublimate at ground pressure - carbon dioxide sublimates at room temperature while iodine sublimates when heated. Water sublimates slowly when frozen.

but eh yea, ill just wait it out alil more for other readings and as evil as it may sound, hope the machine that gave out the bad temps was a lemon and not a sign for things to come =\
but i wana hurry up and decide so i dont have to lose money on shipping =)

Actually lower pressure would found higher in the atmosphere. The lower you go, the more pressure you get. But don't sweat it. :)

You don't think we're not here to help him not cancel his... what?

get the np5796 then. I was going to get the np8660 for college (that i am at now) but then i realized that a np5796 has bigger screen (good for games) and it will last longer because of better temps.

here's the my link to my np5796 temp/benchmark readings:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=276430

when I run in powersaver mode with full blast fans (which i do all the time if not gaming or hard mulitasking in order to lower temps and preserve laptop life), the temps are scary low. this is without any external cooling like a notebook cooler.

Wait a minute, I was right on that part too, pressure is pressure, lower than atm pressure does not mean go to a lower altitude. Atmosphere pressure is a constant, it is defined as 760 mmHg, so lower atmosphere pressure would be a pressure below atmosphere pressure, and below atmosphere pressure means below the atmosphere pressure not a lower altitude in the atmosphere. Man, you got me confused over what I said LOL. I should have known this pretty well, since I took the same medical college admission test 7 times... And I graduated with a BS degree in Biomedical Engineering...

    What's the point?

Are you saying there are a lot of SiO2 in the graphic card?

Darn it can't find the melting point of SiO2, it says SiO2 is amorphous, so it doesn't have a defined melting temperature....

But I doubt it will be the first material inside of the GPU to melt or to sublime. I am guess some metals or some sort of polymers will melt before the SiO2 does.

yeah its only one order with a defective overheating something-below-the-right-palmrest. (perhaps a hdd, as i've been following the 17 page thread so far from Ad@m..) for that performace to size to weight ratio, gosh you got yourself a very good deal!! oh and if you don't get a 8660, you're gonna get a m15x that has alien-like temps?? (think their nearer to the sun than us.. higher temps =x) if you can wait, wait.. wait and see more wonderful reviews.. :) if you really can't wait and need a laptop asap.. hmmm... then i'll think of something else..

There have been 4 reviews so far? 2 of them give it great praise.. one is fairly neutral...and one is negative.

The biggest complaint people are having is the size of the power brick.

I wouldn't worry too much yet.

    The powerbrick does seem huge!

And JGRiopick(sp?) posted that his harddrive hits about 51'C(?) so it seems like Ad@m's is an isolated case.

That said, I thought Sager tests and burns in these machines... Isn't the whole point to catch problems like unusually hot harddrives?

I personally don't think much of the power brick. I mean, think of the power supplies of our desktops. This laptop is easily more powerful than the average desktop out there, and its power brick is about 1/2 the size of the desktop power supplies. It's more than acceptable.

In depth reviews don't come from the information that one gathers in an afternoon of use. It'll take a couple days to really learn what this thing is made of.
