I orderd my 8170 with only one hard drive. I am looking to put another drive into my machine as a data drive. I am not looking to add any raid settings, just an extra drive. Do I need to order anything extra other than a hard drive? I opened up the 2nd HDD bay and the plate seems to be there but I wasn't sure if any other type of bracket has to be ordered for the installation.

The NP8170 comes with everything you need to mount a second drive, all you need is the drive itself

I believe you can even install a third hd in place of the optical drive.

You can but will need to get a mounting caddy, they're pretty easy to find if you ever do want to.

thank you for the information. I have an external hd that I back stuff up to but I may end up adding the second hard drive to move my work files over to.

On a dual bay machine, I wouldn't consider a hybrid drive. Those are compromises to SSDs, especially the 750GB ones that cost more than most 128GB SSDs. With a free bay, get a SSD of some capacity when you can afford one.

I downloaded the manual and if I have the correct model down, I have to remove the optical drive to get the 2nd hd drive cover off. Then it is just a simple plug in and attach the cover and since I am not setting up a raid setting, it should be good to go once I reboot. All that will be left is to format it. Is that correct?

That is correct. Once you've got it installed, you can go to Start > right click Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk management. From there you can format the disk and assign a drive letter.

Yup, that sounds about right. Sager tends to try and make a lot of the parts user serviceable. :)
