i've had it since last september, a loud grinding noise during heavy fan use has led me to believe the bearings are out or the fan is just plain shot.

where can i find out what kind of fan is in my laptop so i can order it independent of any 3rd parties?

@ omg Virtuson, i had the very same problem you had about 4 months ago. i bought my sager 2090 in august 2008 and my fan did the very same loud grinding noise. the noise started small but then is picked up when the fan was at full blast and finally the noise started to start when the fan was at low.

i play lots of street hockey and i thought the fan must also have some kind of bearings inside, so i unscrewed the bottom where the fan was the took the fan apart. i didnt want to game and do my job work on a noisy computer. the only thing i did was drop a few drops of vegetable oil into the bearing opening and problem solved. 4 months later the fan still sounds like a new fan. the only reason i did it cuz i didnt want to without my laptop for weeks on end, it will affect my work.

so try it and have fun. oh and i bought the laptop from the same reseller.

Somehow I don't think that vegetable oil is a recommended lubricant for sealed bearings in a notebook fan....

Same here - at least in cookies (the sort that come from the oven, not the sort that come from a nosy webserver :D).

I generally take a more liberal view of what does, and what doesn't, void a warranty, but I'm pretty sure that putting vegetable oil on the internal fan is going to void the warranty on most of the internal components (fans do, after all, have a tendency to atomize and spray around most liquids that make contact with them).

the oil wont affect the laptop in anyway, check this out
    http://www.pugetsystems.com/submerged.php

and after another month of dropping veg oil into my laptop fan, the fan still is running without any noise, just like when i first got it. even after 1.5 years of getting the sager 2090 i still have it and running. i just might have it for another year or so.

Really? Have you ever seen the power of congealed vegetable oil to gather up dust-bunnies and turn them into slimy grease-bunnies that clog up things like, oh, air vents?

I wouldn't want to be the one trying to explain to a warranty claims adjuster why the inside of my notebook looks just like the underside of my kitchen stove.

Didn't some guy(s?) from MIT put out a cookbook on how to prepare and cook meals using your car? Like: season your steak, wrap it up in heavy duty tin foil and throw it on the engine block, drive at 50 mph for 45 minutes, throw on your corn and then drive 60 mph for 25 minutes?

Who is going to put out a guide on how to cook with your Sager laptop?

Probably only someone whose system is already out of warranty, who has a lot of spare time on her/his hands, and who has a real yen for micro-cooking (as in servings that are less than a gram each). :D

That's the perfect size for a well-cooked amuse bouche! You've coffee shops that have wireless service, this is just a natural evolution! In the words of Chairman Kaga, "Allez cuisine!"

I think Alton Brown would quite agree - perhaps you've come up with a new Good Eats episode? :D

i didnt put the fan back into the laptop right away, i powered up the fan using a spare battery and some wires and it ran for many hours to prove that it worked and that any excess oil flew away. like i said i wasnt going to sent many weeks without a computer so that my work and class work can suffer. the fan is still humming along to this date with no effect to any other parts. oh yea and i never had any problems with any warranty issues, it seems this laptop will last me many good years.

In which case, the problem may have had nothing to do with the bearings not being lubricated, and everything to do with something stuck in the fan, possibly between the rotor and the casing, that got jarred loose when you removed the fan from the housing entirely. In which case putting vegetable oil on it did nothing beneficial, and even if you ran it for hours on end outside the housing, you still would not have managed to reach the point at which there would be no additional oil being misted out by the fan.

All in all, it's still not a good idea to go putting vegetable oil onto the fan of a computer, particularly if it's still under warranty.

the loud noise was occurring many months before i ever opened the bottom of the laptop to upgrade the hard drive, and then cpu. i finally had to do something when i was on the airplane getting to a work meeting, watching a movie, when the noised started and i woke up the person next to me. lol, the only thing i could fine was veg oil.

On the bright side, yotano, it's unlikely your laptop will ever got hot enough to hit the smoke point for vegetable oil.

Even brighter still, you might have yourself a portable hibachi at some point in the future. Mineral oil is decidedly different from vegetable oil.
