Oy mates. I've got a new '5791 here that im writing this question on and its got 4 gb of ram on vista 64. its showing a constant 32% ram usage and it rates my ram as only 4.8 on the Windows Experince Index, is this normal? what have you guys seen?

ive optimized vista btw, no flashy stuff no spyware blockers no windows restore.

    i use a 7500 processor and G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit RAM.

.... normal or is my ram working crappy?

    Thanks guys!

btw, the 8700m is kicking butt so far! no need for anything better (crosses fingers).

P.S. yes, vista IS recognizing all 4 gigs of ram

    Both are a bit low.

My NP9261 runs at 40% but gets a WEI of 5.9 for RAM

Sounds completely normal.... I run the same system with 4GB and usually when the system boots up I am at about 37% used.

I have 2gb and use about 24% at startup, so maybe you have a whole bunch of crap starting.

well thats a relief in general.

so does this mean i'm stuck with only ~2784mb (68%) for other uses? is that other 32% always going to be in use just to keep windows going?

And thanks guys, appreciate the input. I'm new to this but i figured i'd better learn a lot about laptops before I blew 2 grand on one, and i'm happy i did this sager is BLOWING MY MIND.

So my WEI is low.. did i mismatch and get ram that was not as fast as my motherboard/whatever?

That, or maybe Vista is taking advantage of his extra RAM.

    2 things duckmonk..well 3 things ;)

    1.) NP926x are using 800MHz RAM, while NP579x is using 667MHz RAM - that's why there is 0.1 difference..but it's almost non-existent, so you shouldn't worry

2.) WEI doesn't mean a...thing :p this pathetic "benchmark" can give you different scores on two IDENTICAL computers..don;t bother with it at all

3.) congrats on GREAT machine!! I hope you enjoy it!

Hmmm...that must be it, because I too have 2GB RAM and I usually have around 32% used up, just like the OP.

Edit: Found it. Do you have the Update KB 938979 installed? If not you can grab it here. Be sure to specify what version you want i.e. x64. My ram usage went from 58% to 38% which is a good performance enhancement. Btw I have 2GB of RAM, yours should go lower. Note: This KB update will be part of the Vista SP1 release, so you can just wait for it if you want.

I have 2 gigs or RAM and premium x 64, and about 40% of the RAM is used by Vista... :)
