OK! Now, I've had my NP9262 for a few weks, and besides the dissapointing speed of my q6600 (yet it still is better than the 1.6 centrino on my desktop), I've been very satisfied with my purchase. But there is another problem I've noticed, and I've just kind of dealt with it till recently. I've looked all over on the net and I've applied tweaks, registry modifications, and of course, bootvis, and even after all that, I have a boot time grand total of 153.9 seconds!!! This is also after I've defragged, disk cleanup, removed pretty much all my unessential startup services (in msconfig) and optimized using bootvis. I have a 100 gb 7200 RPM. I have 35.1 gb of free space left, and even when I booted with my laptop during my first days wth it, the boot time has been appalling. Is this standard for laptops?

    Thx

No... its XP lol. I chose not use vista, for that exact reason, along with performance issues and being a memory hog. So that's why I'm confused as to why my boot times are so unsatisfactory.

No I haven't, it should already be enabled by the place I bought it shouldn't have it? Though I purchased my laptop without an OS, so that may be why. How do you go about enabling it?

Lol I just downloaded from that page using google. I always ask and then do the obvious because Im gangster like that haha. Anyway the hotfix helped a lot. 106.7 now. Pretty sweet, but Im rooting for 50-60 sec, cuz that seems reasonable. Thx for the advice (REP FOR EVERYONE!). So any other suggestions?

Mine loads in 10-15 seconds, and my computer only cost of $600 when I built it a year ago (it's a desktop)

Mine are all stock speeds, Im a little reluctant to OC, for I've nvr done it before, but is there anything I can do speed things up just a bit more? That hotfix really helped, but thats not enough for me, cuz I loathe 109 sec, and Im sure im not the only one.

PS thx for putting up with my query thus far.

There are XP tweaks to speed up the boot times.

But the fastest way to bootup is to just Hibernate rather than shutting down.

Alright, but I'm just making sure, after the memory transfer to the hdd, hibernation shuts COMPLETELY down? Because when Im not using it, I pack it back away in my carrying case, and I don't want any overheating. I know this is a n00b question, but I don't care, I want to be completely sure.

Use Vista, with your system I wouldn't be concerned with it being a "memory hog" anyways, and on my 5793 I boot in about about a minute, even with an excessive amount of startup services and programs. IMO Vista runs faster than XP for powerful systems, though I have never ran it on my 5793. Also, have you tried using PerfectDisk and running a boot-time system files defrag? This could help a lot, I run a boot-time every week to keep it snappy during bootup, and I use CCleaner to keep crap out of my registry.

nvm about disabling the card read reader as i thought you could do it through the bios but it's not possible. you may have spyware as i would think it is software related.

Ah you brought up a very good point. When I ran XP on my old laptop, I had AVG AS, Avast AV, windows firewall and my router firewall, but I was still able to get some crap on my comp that slowed down operation A LOT. I reformatted my comp and loaded XP and every single program and service I was running before and my boot and operation was revived to optimal performance, so my guess was that some crap had found its way on my comp (I am a bit reckless when it comes to security). Overall I figure that XP is very porous when it comes to security (or it has been around long enough for malicious programmers to hack out weaknesses) which is the one, if only, redeeming factor of Vista: enhanced security.
I think I am promoting Vista...
    I never thought...

Well I planned on getting vista anyway as soon as I upgraded to 4 gb of mem, but Im not doing THAT until I have enough $ to buy my second 8800m GTX. I also use CCleaner, I find it to be one of the most efficient PC upkeep tools (freeware and otherwise) on the net. I'll be sure to check out PerfectDisk and I'll do a boot-time system file defrag (which I'm not sure how, but google is my friend). And Im pretty sure that it isn't spyware or viruses because my laptop has behaved the same way since it was vanilla. Anyway I'll try these suggestions and be back with my results. Thank you.

perfect disk imo is the best defrag program out there..ccleaner is ok imo but not great. for someone who wants a quick basic cleanup it is fine but its not as in depth as many others. imo the best out there is a program called jv16powertools by macecraft. this program rocks and actually does what it says its going to do unlike a lot of others including ccleaner at times. when using ccleaner to uninstall it simple starts the windows uninstaller or the programs uninstall exe.. jv16 completely wipes it out reg entries and all.. i use jv 16 after doing the normal uninstall and it will find leftover stuff ccleaner never will..

ccleaner has a startup section as well so you can try to kill stuff that is starting thats not needed.. but i have found with ccleaner at times even though you click to disable or delete the startup entry the program will still start or it will not be removed. not the case with jv16..

there are other goods ones also but this is my recc..

def do a boot-time defrag with perfect disk even if you use the trial version. should make a big difference there alone..

and btw i just had the same issues with a sony vaio notebook i was repairing for someone.. it sat at the loading screen for like 60 sec before even hitting the actual windows screen.. took a lot of work in the reg to get it fixed but it works great now.. if you can do a boot time log and see whats actually going on during boot.. this way you can fix the specific issues that are occurring.

I don't use CCleaner to uninstall programs, But I dod use it after I uninstall from the installers because CCleaner supplies you with a registry scanner, and that removed all the context menu's that I had from uninstalling programs (e.g. winzip, I unsintalled and the context buttons in the drop-downs were still present). I used the pagedfrg tool for windows to defrag the system files, no problems were shown. I have just downloaded perfectdisk and will do a defrag with it later when Im not using my laptop.

Im not sure where I would find a boot time log at, if any of you were willing to tell me where it is, I'd be willing to upload it so I can let you guys look over it and see if you can spot any issues.

    P.S. I'll also try this jv16powertools.

first you will def find jv16powertools is much more effective than ccleaner..please be careful what you delete. if you are not sure of a registry entry lmk or im sure someone here can help you know what its for. and unless you know your registry well i suggest making a backup "just in case" i dont use a backup but i can fix the registry myself..

also have you tried clearing your prefetch data to allow it to re-learn it.. this does help a lot sometimes. normally for older systems but i have used this to speed up newer systems also and had luck at times..

"Simply browse to the windows folder (Ex: C:\Windows) and under there you should see the prefetch folder. Go into the prefetch folder and delete all the files (Careful! It should look like this c:\windows\prefetch) And here is a screenshot of one if you still have questions"

the next re-boot may be a bit slower due to windows re-learning the prefetch data..

my other recc to you is to try bootvis this is a microsoft tool. i could write you a how to but this one explains it all already: http://www.weethet.nl/english/hardware_bootvis.php

this will allow you to basically see everything that happens during your boot up..its free and can be downloaded from here: http://www.weethet.nl/downloads/bootvis.rar again its a microsoft tool designed for system builders so i gaurantee you this file is okay ive checked it to make sure its virus free.

lmk if you have any questions about bootvis. it should fix your problems..and ill help if i can.

I've used bootvis already and it did help sufficiently, by almost 15 sec. And I will delete the prefetch data and see what happens. Thank you much (REP). A little off topic but could be related, where could I find an updated bios for the D901C Chassis/Model NP9262? If there is a newer bios, does it have more features than the one it does now? I don't like the one I have right now, there aren't many features to take advantage of on the version I'm using (not sure what version it is).

Unfortunately, from what dexgo and others have said (i.e., those who like to poke around in the verboten innards :D ), it sounds like Clevo generally puts out a very bland, no frills BIOS (one that needs some extensive modding, in other words). Anyone up for the challenge? Perhaps zfactor, since he seems to have the Phoenix BIOS editor handy.
