Hey all, I've been looking at these barebone d900k's on ebay, which are actually the alienware m7700. This would be my first notebook build and my first clevo. The description says its designed to support the nvidia 7800. Thats not going to work for me. Is this just ignorance on the sellers part? Or can i use lets say a 7900gtx or something in it? Thanks for your help!

Yes you can upgrade up to the 7950GTX (Clevo module) on this particular notebook.
It just need to get a small BIOS update to recognize the newer videocard.
This notebook has the following compatible videocards:
(not standard, they are Clevo modules)
- ATI X800
- Nvidia 6800 Go (DDR1 or DDR3)
- Nvidia 7800 Go GTX
- Nvidia 7900 Go GTX (256mb or 512mb version)
- Nvidia 7950 Go GTX
- Nvidia Quadro 1500M (equivalent to 7800GTX or 7900GS)
- Nvidia Quadro 2500M (equivalent to 7900GTX -
Awesome thanks for the reply =)

a question for you gophn, how hard is it to install the core essentials on a barebone (CPU,GPU,etc.)
-
pretty straightforward, very similar to desktops... but much more simplified since the components are place in a certain section of the notebook. (while desktops, you have to choose the PCI slot to use, or HDD bay to stick it in and then clean up the wiring.
I would only recommend it to those that are comfortable working with computer hardware.
I built my notebook under an hour, includes GPU, CPU, RAM, Optical Drives, Wifi card.... and the Arctic Silver that I applied for the CPU and the GPU.
I never had to do any screws for any components really... except the 4 for the GPU module. -

this only applies to MXM laptops right?
I thought the CPU was a component that was soldered onto the motherboard no matter what kind of laptop, guess I got some misleading information. -
I think it depends on the manufacturer. Some allow you to swap out the CPU.

Most notebooks use CPU sockets like desktops... so they are upgraded the same way.
Just make sure to apply thermal paste when swapping in a new CPU.
