    Hi everyone,

I currently have the GTX 675 MX in my NP9170 and i was wondering if I upgraded it, what would be the best compatible GPU to upgrade to? are there any series better than 600 series that are compatible or am i stuck in the 600 series?

    Thank you!

Is that a P170HM or P170EM computer? If it's the EM, you could use a 980M in it with Prema's BIOS. If it's the HM, you're probably best with a 680M.

It's the EM. How expensive is the 980M? If it's pretty high up there, how expensive would something in the 700 or 800 series be?

I was hoping to be able to spend no more than maybe $700-800 USD if that's possible.

EM series aint compatible with 700 and 800 series, just 600 and 900 now :) check ebay, ask your reseller / vendor and also check alternative clevo resellers / vendors to compare prices...

980M from RJTech is $720 USD, so it's within your budget.

wow RJTech has great prices. do you think it's worth the 980m when the 970m is $300 cheaper? I would assume the 970m is compatible if the 980m is but would like to just get that confirmed if possible? thank you D2 for letting me know about RJTech.

Does the proper heatsink pipe come with the card, or would i need to find a site that sells that as well?

I didn't think the 980M was worth it.. Its about 30% behind a 980M which can easily be made up with an OC and $300 less so I'd get the 970M :D

always depends what ur needs and wants are :) the 970M is indeed 30% slower and can be oced to 980M stock levels, but then so can the 980M, of course ;)
best to analyze ur usage, be honest with urself, check ur budget and then decide which gpu would fulfill ur needs/wants best :)

970M is still an awesome performance boost over 675MX.

Also thermal boost, will run a lot cooler than the 675MX.

I agree with the above basically. The 970M offers the best bang per buck while the 980M is the fastest around there is and you get a nice boost still from stepping up to it.

how does that work? can you use an existing heatsink, or is it card-specific? i've never actually done a mobile GPU upgrade before.

It varies system to system. You should be able to just reorganise the thermal pads.

i had two 7970m in crossfire and 1 980m gave me better fps in the games i play. personally i would go for a 980m in your situation since your notebook can only have 1 gpu in it.

Wait, when did this happen? I've been away from these forums for a while, haven't been keeping up to date. When did Prema release updates for the P170EM bios? I've had my P170EM with 7970m since June 2012, and I'm starting to get the upgrade itch. A 980m would be sweet. I checked Prema's website and it looks like V2 is still the latest bios. I've been running V2 for almost two years now. Can I just pop in a 980m and go?

That's weird... I know the EM series was supposed to be updated. I wonder if it was only the P150EM and P370EM?

You should message Prema and find out to be sure before you buy a new card and find out it won't boot.
