Impressive yours managed to, often they don't. Not too much to be gained though, tight timing 1866mhz is more likely to be stable and offer all the performance.

How do I go about doing this for the 16gb of ram (not sure of brand name) in my p170em? Intel extreme tuning utility?

Sounds like 1866mhz is what I'd go for as I don't want unstable. I've never adjusted ram before, and from this post, sounds like I can go about this a couple different ways?

Sorry if this is thread hijacking.

Trial and error the timings basically. Follow any ram tuning guide.

It won't be heat then, it will simply not be stable at that speed. It's likely the IMC rather than the modules.

I heard changing slots can help but too lazy to do this. Still testing with memtest now.

If its unstable at 2133mhz now it always was. It was just a matter of time.

That's pretty normal to be fair. CL8 is very tight.

I find stability to be a sliding scale, really depends on how much you need/want of it. If I'm benchmarking, then as long as the system is stable enough to pull through the duration of said benchmark I'm happy. The most I'd do is run XTU stress test for 5 minutes and if the system passes I move on. For daily use I run stock settings, and for gaming I only use a mild OC which I know to be stable from past experience.

...wait why am I rambling again?

Back on topic: even with the magical set of GSkill ram that was a good silicon lottery win, I still can't do 1866 at CL8. The most it'll do is 1866 CL9. It'll run 2133 CL10 and 2400 CL11 though, so really can't complain.

now running at 2000 CL9! passed memtest no blue screen rock solid! i think 2000 CL9 is not much slower than 2133 CL10. happy now

If there are no bios options then you can't actually.

    Not bad none the less.

^so if there are no options in BIOS then what sets the command rate? Curious because it defaults to 1T on mine, whereas it seems to be 2T on this guy's P170EM.

It's a common auto setting as it covers most if not all cases quite well.
