Just today my clevo w230st started beeping regularly every 3 seconds or so when I played hearthstone. It then shut off. I assume this is due to the thermal alarm sensing that the temperatures are too high, but the problem is is that they arent. Checking the temps reveals mid 60s for both cpu and gpu cores. Playing other games like league/bioshock gave similar results. When I stress tested them, running temps as high as 95+, the beeping did not occur and the computer did not shut off. So either:

    1. It is not the thermal alarm , OR
    2. The thermal alarm is faulty.

So how would I go about fixing this?

EDIT: it may perhaps be the gpu after all... running nvidia geforce experience with the dedicated gpu begins the beeping; however running it with the integrated gpu does not. Should also note that it starts beeping almost instantaneously.

I also tried to reformat the computer with a usb stick but the computer starts beeping and turns off before I can get anything done

In addition, I have checked the RAM (using only one at a time) and it is not the issue, the beeps persist no matter which ram stick I use. My fan is working perfectly and I have reapplied thermal paste. It's still beeping :(

If the beeping lasts 30 seconds then shutoff, then it's a fan-not-plugged-in type of error. If your fan is plugged in and working properly, then you should RMA it, or at least try taking it into a clevo repair center (wherever the heck those things exist).

It probably doesn't trigger instantly because you have Optimus built in, but for me on my P370SM3 (as I *MUST* use the dGPU 24/7) it happens even in the BIOS menu.

I saw you type that your fan was working, but I wanted to be certain. I suggest RMA-ing it and seeing what is going on, or try the link Sir Wingnut put and see if it helps you sort the problem out. Good luck! =D

Hey I saw that post. Do you have a short guide on how to reset the system and bios? Specifically, "pulling power, battery, and CMOS battery". I think I found the CMOS battery (the round battery inside?) but I'm hesitant to do anything to it, what should I do to take it out and put it back in safely and not damage my computer? And how long should I leave the laptop unplugged w/ no battery?

Also it seems my issue is slightly different from everyone else's. If I don't use my discrete gpu, I never get any beeping, but as soon as I start using it, it will beep.

unfortunately my warranty ran out earlier this month and RMA would cost $300+ b/c I live in canada haha... thanks though! :)

24 hours with no battery/PSU attached will reset BIOS settings to default as far as I know (it removes undervolts for me). The CMOS clear would take place within a couple minutes; you take it out, brew a cup of coffee, come back and put it back in and you should be all-green. I don't know if it's a fix for you, but good luck!

Please be aware: if you do a CMOS clear and windows does not boot you may need to re-set UEFI boot: Windows in your BIOS. It might become un-set.

But how do I actually do the CMOS clear? literally just remove the battery and put it back after 5 minutes?

Try removing the PC battery and the power cord and just leaving it off for 24+ hours. See if that helps. If that does not help... I don't know. I would say Reinstall WIndows but that's not always feasible.

should I remove the cmos battery too?

And I have tried reinstalling windows but using a bootable usb doesn't work (beeps and shuts off) and refreshing/reinstalling using the windows menu doesn't work either (does the same thing)

I'm almost dead certain that thing needs a RMA. But no, leave the CMOS in.

yea it looks like it's a goner lol... it now just beep regardless of anything when I start it up... sigh this was my only laptop and I don't have enough money to get another before university starts. Sucks. Took it to university repair center and they had no idea what was wrong with it
