Hello everyone,
I just installed the GTX 970m in my clevo p170EM. after installing prema's bios and vBios, I'm not having any luck installing the graphics drivers, it says it isn't being detected. I had this issue before with my gtx 675MX after I had to reinstall windows 7. Does anyone know what might have caused the error detecting it? I have the intel graphics driver installed, which I know is a pre-req.
any help would really be appreciated.
Thank you!
edit: i added my device's ID and subsystem to the nvam.inf file and it installed, but I don't know if it is working correctly, since in device manager I see the driver in device manager, though with the optimus activity indicator (enabled in nvidia control panel) isn't showing any activity. Does anybody know why this would be, or how to ensure I'm using my 970m for what I've set to use it for?
2nd edit: just checked bios. even after installing successfully, bios still says "VGA Card: empty".
How do I fix this? I made sure the card was seated properly.
Thanks!

well, I switched back to my 675mx until I get this answered, hopefully it'll be soon... the 675mx is detected, made sure to check bios before booting all the way up.
-
I don't know if it's the same issue but my P377SM-A doesn't recognize my 980Ms either, it says unknown but they work fine. If the drivers install, the card is installed properly but I don't have Optimus so I can't tell you what's going on with it.
Did you use DDU to clean all your driver's, reboot, install Intel drivers, reboot, install nVidia? It seems that commonly fixes Optimus problems.schnoergsdalumaner and msd1994 like this. -
oh I needed to uninstall intel's drivers too? Crap... Okay. ill try that tomorrow. Thank you.
also, what is DDU? google answered this for me. display driver uninstaller? I'll try it when I reinstall. thank you!Last edited: Mar 25, 2015Ethrem likes this. -
That's just the recommendation I've seen around here when people have problems with Optimus, seems to fix most of them.
And yes, DDU is display driver uninstaller. You want to run it in safe mode and remove both Intel and nVidia then reboot and install the latest Intel drivers, reboot and install the latest nVidia. -
okay, just clarifying. I would remove both, then switch out the graphics cards, *then* install intel and nvidia?
-
Correct. The reboot inbetween each step is important too. Also turn off automatic updates to make sure that Windows doesn't install a driver in the background.
-
okay, and when you said your p377SM-A doesn't detect your 980m's either did you mean in bios they aren't detected but in windows they are, or other way around?
-
My BIOS shows unknown for the cards. When I sent it off to Sager they didn't flash a new system BIOS. It doesn't seem to have any effect on the cards working in Windows.
-
this has to be asked.
did the card come from a dell laptop or was it from a clevo supplier.
i know nothing about upgrading graphics cards but i do know that over the years many people have had issues putting a dell card in a clevo. -

It's common for them to not be listed in the BIOS. With the right firmware (which it sounds like you have) and new drivers, the card should work. -
Well, the game ran but it was lower FPS than what I got with my 675mx so I assumed it was running off the integrated. My power supply is a 19.5V * 11.8A (around 230 watts). This should be sufficient to power the 970m, correct?
-
It was from a RJTech, a clevo supplier, though it was sold for the sm-a series, I was recommended to that site and they knew I was getting it for the EM series so I would assume it would work.
-
So you haven't had any luck reinstalling everything?
-
I have been busy with school. I am going to try again today after my classes, and hopefully have better luck. I did a little more looking around and found that the graphics cards running on the latest driver (ends in 88) have had throttling issues, which was the driver I installed but didn't have my 675mx running on. This could explain the lower fps, I will know in a few hours with any luck.
-
It's working now! I think the problem was optimus not choosing the correct card. Thank you!

Hi mssd1994, I'm glad i came across this post. been searching high and low for it. I'm about to do the same as you did for your p170EM and would really appreciate if you could provide me with more info on the prema's bios and vbios that you're using?
Do you have a step-by-step by any chance? -
@msd1994: Hope you're out there somewhere! As it seems that other People have the same issue including myself, I (we) would very appreciate, if you could explain what steps and in which order you've succeeded in reviving the Card.
-
Got it sorted out finally!
For all those who still have this issue, I try to explain how to do it.
Mandatory:
- Flash latest PremaMod BIOS to your rig
- Flash latest PremaMod VBIOS onto your Card -> see Guide - Step by Step
https://biosmods.wordpress.com/
AND DON'T FORGET TO FLIP IN SOME COINS FOR A BEER OR MANY OR THE WRATH OF BAD LUCK WILL FALL UPON YOU!
Prerequisites:
DDU ( Display Driver Uninstaller)
(latest) Intel HD Driver
(latest) Nvidia Driver
Guide - Step by Step:
- load DDU in safe Mode and uninstall Nvidia Driver first - Reboot!
- load DDU again in safe Mode and uninstall Intel Driver
- hit the button "Switch Windows automatic updates to Standard" to prevent WinGoofs installing the Windows Driver for your Card (you have to change the Settings afterwards then)
- Close DDU by hitting "Turn off your Computer to install new Card"
- swap your Cards and turn your rig on -> now Flash latest PremaMod VBIOS onto your Card! - Reboot!
- install Intel HD Drivers first - Reboot!
- install Nvidia Divers afterwards and make sure you install it via custom install and hit the button "new installation" -> if the Installation fails due to Nvidia Driver Installation can't find compatible Hardware, you're in serious trouble/Card may be faulty....
Troubleshooting:
- if Installation fails, try another driver Version and/or force it with Driver signature deactivated
- if it fails again, try modded Drivers via laptopvideo2go or mod the appropriate .inf file by adding your device ID
- if that fails your card is probably faulty in one or another way
- if Installation succeeded check Nvidia Control Panel for appropriate Settings -> try another Tools like GPU-Z and/or Nvidia Inspector to get sure the Card is recognised properly
- run some benchmarking Tools like 3DMark to check, if the score matches your cards Performance!
Hope, I could be of some help! If you have something to add, then feel free to do so!
Cheers!Last edited: Oct 6, 2015John3, schnoergsdalumaner, Automatikjack and 5 others like this. -
Ah glad to see you got it working! Sorry for no replies, I've been busy with work the past few months. This is a nice short guide ^^
I personally added the proper Hardware ID's myself to the nvidia driver install's proper INF files, so you can look up a guide on how to do this if the modded drivers don't work for you (which is most likely all they did when modding it)
I'll try to make an effort to check notebookreview more often in case anybody has questions though seems like your guide will help most I'm sure -
Glad you're here again!
Unfortunately I probably got a faulty one! I can install the drivers and it is recognized in Nvidia Inspector and in the device manager. But as soon as it switches to dGpu I get a BSOD (video_tdr_failure nvlddmkm.sys)....
Curiously it runs the mem clock at 1500Mhz (waaay to low) with no chance to adjust it as well with the core clock, which runs constantly with turbo boost on (1038Mhz). -
have you tried it on an OS other than win 10? It may be the OS. May want to try before requesting RMA, that's disappointing to hear though
hope it gets sorted out.
-
Both Win8.1 and Win10. I am pretty sure now that I got a faulty one!
