    Hello all,
I have a clevo p170hm/sager np8170 on order right now, and my reseller has mentioned that in their tests of these machines they have been having instability problems w/ higher speed memory....meaning higher then 1066mhz....in my initial order I asked for:
    KINGSTON, 16GB (4 x 4GB) XMP HyperX PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz SDRAM SODIMM, CL9, 1.5V, Non-ECC
    w/ a i7-2860QM Quad-Core 2.5 - 3.6GHz cpu.

I was told by the reseller that anything above 1066mhz memory (no matter what memory maker) causes instability in the system, and therefore I should go w/ 1066mhz speed.
    they proposed this instead:
    KINGSTON, 16GB (4 x 4GB) PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM SODIMM, CL7, Non-ECC

Personally I have not heard this before and was quite baffled. what's the point of having the option of higher speed ram, if only the lower speed is stable/works?

I would like anyone here that either owns a clevo p170hm/sager np8170 or builds/sells them to confirm if there are any issues w/ higher speed ram for this model....

    thanks in advance.

Maybe they just have a bad batch of RAM, or maybe they're out of stock and trying to get you to buy a lower model which they have in stock!

It's just a conspiracy theory... JK.

The 1866 memory works fine in the P150HM, I see why not in the P170HM.

I have the P170HM right now and I'm using the PC3-12800/1600MHz.

No issues so far, but I've only had my laptop for about a week.

1600MHz in the P170HM, 2 months now, no problem, also Mem Multiplier up to 21.33x and zero stability issues

Which reseller told you that 1600mhz+ ram is unstable in the P170's?

I haven't heard this, but in general 1333Mhz RAM should definitely work as it's the default RAM for these models. As others have reported, 1600 and 1866Mhz work as well if you have a supported CPU.

Xotic PC here too, we haven't heard of any issues on higher-speed memory either. Maybe a bad batch?

1866 pnp ram works fine with my P150. Had the ram in for about a month now.

My 1866 cl11 would run 2133 @ cl12, running it default on 1866 @ cl10 now no problems after many hours on memtest whatsoever. :)

Edit: intersting link there DGDXGDG... never tried cl9 on 1866...YET. ;)

I just received my Malibal P170HM last week.

My Malibal P170HM failed to boot with 2 x 4GB 1866MHz HyperX RAM, it keeps showing OS corrupted, failed to load my OS.

But it can boot when i tried with 1 x 4GB 1866MHz HyperX ram. I really dont understand this....

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64x.

Are there any solutions for this? like BIOS update?

Or i7-2670 does not support dual channel 1866MHz ram?

Did you boot using each stick of ram separately?

Was this RAM you purchased separately? Is it plug-and-play JEDEC RAM or XTU RAM?

Thanks for reply. I bought the 2 x 4GB Kingston HyperX 8GB Kit together, i have no problem to run the 2 x 4GB 1866MHz dual channel RAM in my Asus N61jQ, i7-720QM (but it runs in 1333MHz instead, probably N61JQ only supports 1333Mhz).

The model number is "204-Pin KHX1866C11S3P1K2/8G".

How can i find out whether it is a "plug-and-play JEDEC RAM" or "XTU RAM"?

Is there something wrong with my machine?

    Thanks

    KHX1866C11S3P1K2/8G = JEDEC RAM
    KHX1866C11S3P1K2/8G X = XMP RAM

There is nothing wrong, it may be just that the first gen i7's only support up to 1333MHz.

Hi Ryan, thanks for your replied.

Does i7-2670 supports dual channel KHX1866C11S3P1K2/8G 1866MHz ram?

    Thanks

It supports all RAM, just that it won't run in advertised timings and frequency.

For the 2670, it will run in 1600MHz if I'm not mistaken.

You are mistaken. The 2600QM series run only at 1333mhz! The 2700QM series run 1600mhz according to the Intel site.

    The 2720: Intel® Core? i7-2720QM Processor (6M Cache, 2.20 GHz))
    The 2670: Intel® Core? i7-2670QM Processor (6M Cache, 2.20 GHz))

Research first! Dont buy stuff that is unsupported by your CPU!

Advice 1: contact your reseller and either change the CPU to 2720 or 2760.
Advice 2: exchange to 1333mhz ram and save some cash. :)

Before you tell someone you are wrong, be 100% sure.

The 2720QM + supports PnP 1866 RAM as advertised,

whilst the 2630QM, 2670QM support up to PnP 1600 RAM, when I looked around the forums.

Intel just advertises the safe margins for specs, if you see my sig, you'll notice that I'm running 16GB of 1866 PnP RAM with a 2720QM.

Hey, Ryan and b0b1man, thank you so much for the response.

I actually bought the 1866MHz RAM kit before i ordered my P170HM for future upgrade :p . It seems like now none of my laptop is supporting that.

By the way, i read from the post below and found out that the P170HM seem to have some memory issues. Even i7-2920XM which suppose to support 1600MHz ram has problem to boot with "Kingston Hyperx 1600MHz XMP Memory 2 x 4GB --- KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX". Somebody was saying that the BIOS was underdeveloped.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/575938-sager-np8170-memory-issue.html

My point is even i7-2670 does not support memory above 1333MHz, it was supposed to cropped those high speed memory to the speed it supports, like my Asus N61JQ with i7-720(no problem running my 2 x 4GB 1866MHz ram kit but cropped down to 1333MHz) which i mentioned before.

I hope this is something can be fixed in the coming Bios update. :)

2670 should run at 1600MHz from what I read in the Asus forums.. as they did with the 2630QM.

I can vouch that the 2720QM can handle 1866MHz memory,

But KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX This model is not PnP Model, and as the 15" have no XTU support, there is no way to make that run in 1600, it will only run in 1333.
