Sorry. im terrible at explaining things.

On the P170SM where you power the machine on theirs some icons 6 of them. the one on the far left is like a car speedometer this is the one that when it turns off the laptop fans go quite but when the light comes back on the fans go loud again.

Sorry again im not great at explaining things.

the problem is that when the light stays on the fans are loud even when the laptop is idle doing nothing.

Well, lets see if I got it right: the High Performance indicator lights up when the laptop is in full use and the fans are loud (thats normal). When the laptop is not in heavy use, the LED goes out, the fans lower their speeds and the system is quiet (thats also normal).
But for some reason, your laptop stays on Maximum Performance all the time and the fans annoy you with their loudness.
    Correct?

If thats the case, then check the background processes (ctrl + alt + delete) in task manager and see if there is a process that keeps the system busy and thus forcing it to be in Max Performance all the time.
Second solution - go to Control Panel -> Power Options and set the Power Plan to Balanced. This should reduce the usage of the system when the power is not needed.

also, I saw you mentioning Optimus technology earlier. That computer/GPU you mentioned should have that technology unless I misunderstood what you were saying, just FYI.

You hit the nail on the head thats exactly what im talking about thank god someone understands me :D.

I have turned the laptop to balanced mode however theirs also a performance mode and a energy star mode :). laptop does seems to produce less fan noise but the little white light continues to stay on and im not sure whats causing this.

I tried putting the laptop on energy star mode and power saver and it still wont lower the fan noise which is strange. i checked in the tasks i cant see anything abnormal taking loads of usage.

Here is something strange though take a look at these pictures...

    CPU 0.png CPU 99.png

What the hell?, is that weird or what ?.

Something is making these fans go loud and looking at that i hope this is not going to be serious problem.

    plz help me :(.

What are your GPU/CPU temps? If you dont haver a program to monitor them get HWMonitor which is a fee download.
You can also try Fn + 1 which will turn the fans on full blast. That may not help though as they do seem to turn off occasionally.

The system idling at 99% is normal. Since computers cannot stop thinking (weird, right?), there is the System Idle process which gives the CPU some basic 0's and 1's to play around with while it waits for its next huge task.

If the temperatures inside reach a certain threshhold, then the fans work louder to cool things off.
Maybe if you work in a warm place it can cause them to rev up constantly.
OR...you just need to place some caps below the laptop feet to allow for more airflow and thus increasing the cooling effectiveness, so the fans would run with less RPM and be quieter.

The third option would be to check which programs use your GPU the most (the nvidia one) and you can do that in the NVIDIA Control Panel -> Manage 3D settings.
Set all those programs to use the integrated GPU instead of the dedicated one.
    Not recommended for games, though.

Fourth option - just forget about the loud fans and enjoy the machine!

Information.jpg As you requested hope this helps.

Tried using integrated GPU not working.

Its quite cold where i live UK. also gas prices go up soon people will freeze to death.

Sorry but this laptop when i first got it the fans where really quite the laptop worked as intended however a few days after use the laptop never does that anymore, it just keeps the fans going even when the machine is doing nothing.

I guess the PCH (platform host controller) is heating up so the fans might react to that temp.
But thats only a wild guess.
Lets wait for the more experienced users to post something on that.

According to the OP, the constant fan noise was not happening when he first got the machine.
So it cant be the BIOS and EC at fault, I think.

I too have P170SM. From what I understand from your thread. Looks like some application or game is using nvidia card. As soon as it becomes active, its light above keyboard lits and its fan starts at 100% speed. Are you getting most fan noise from left hand side from back?

Is that a normal temperature for the PCH ?. I asked a mate who has same machine just gtx 780m is the difference, he says he has the same problem as me but he fixed it by changing the nvidia 3d settings to auto select that stopped the fan noise when it went idle.

Tried changing nvidia 3d options to auto select rebooted and nothing, tried rebooting again and touch wood its ok now but im worried encase i reboot again it will go back to the loud fan noise when idle :(.

I cant find any updated bios or drivers but if anyone comes across a new bios or anything please tell me as i think the one currently installed has some issues with the fans or something :(.

    thanks guys!.

Thanks for the iteration. :) Thing is, if said temps weren't hit previously, then we can't say for sure if it is or isn't. I'd rather have all the bases covered.

I'm sorry to say I don't have commonplace PCH temps to let you know what it typically runs at, but if you can enter your BIOS setup and let me know what your version is, maybe we can figure out if there's an update for you or not. :)

About the PCH, the temps there are always high (and are known to go higher than the other components).
Its not being cooled by anything, it doesent have a heatsink, the fans are out of reach. Normal stuff.
But still, it shouldnt go "too hot" (anything near 95-100 degrees is unwanted).

Some people have used a thermal pad to touch it to the casing or putting a very slim heatsink on it if it gets really hot.

Touch wood the problem is solved rebooted today all seems fine but sometimes it will go back to the loud fan noises reboot is needed for some reason im sure this is a bios problem but cant be positive :(.

I shall find my bios for you and repost its version when i get some time again cheers guys!.
