config for a clevo with malibal

Hi there,

I'd like to buy a new laptop, and wonder if someone could advise me about it here.
I'm a software engineer, and my urxvt+zsh+tmux+vim conf is quite slow, my current laptop being a bit old is paining to run it smoothly. Running programs regularly, I often see python processes taking 100% of my 2Go RAM.
Also, I love Chromium and many of its plugins, but it becomes really heavy and it freezes so many times that I can't use all the plugins I'd like to.
Therefore, I want a lot of "good" ram, and a very good processor.

Arch Linux / Gentoo user, with a very light window manager (i3), I don't care about graphical card perfs (just want it to smoothly support dual monitors at 1920x1080 and to render properly the movies I'll watch occasionally).

I'm using a lot of cloud services, therefore I don't need much storage. But for the sake of fast files transactions, I want some ssd.


That being said, I recently discovered Malibal. And really like those Clevo they offer. Here is a config I've made on it:




What do you think about it ? Is Malibal really worth it ? Do you know of other similar websites maybe ?

It looks like a good config. The only suggestions I have are to consider whether or not you need that CPU upgrade and the 1866Mhz RAM. If you are going to be doing CPU intensive work where every clock cycle counts and the cost isn't prohibitive, then by all means go with it.

However, the gains from moving up from the 2760QM to the 2860QM are very minimal for most tasks. The price difference is also fairly substantial in comparison, which is why the 2760QM is considered the sweet spot in performance and price.

The RAM upgrade will be ~8-10% better than the stock 1333Mhz.

If you do a lot of work over wireless and you have an N router at home capable of 300Mbps+, then the Intel WiFi may also be beneficial to you.

Will you be needing more than the 120GB of storage you get with the SSD? Many people find little use in optical media anymore and opt to have the DVD drive replaced with a caddy + HDD to increase the storage space on board.

 

No problem at all, what you have posted now is perfect.

With your desire for good RAM and a fast CPU the options you selected are the best to go with. I agree with Anthony in the 2760QM is the sweet spot, but if you want the best available on that model the 2860QM is it. Since you're actually looking for more of a workstation and not a gaming rig I say go for the faster CPU and the 1866mhz RAM.

I think your current build looks great for what you want to do.

 

I see. Really annoying that the performance increase is so small for a lot more expensive price.

But I have a $2000 budget, so I can afford it, will still be very useful when running long computations.

I won't need more storage, already have 150Gb+ of cloud storage from my various services, and an external hard drive for 300Gb, more than enough for me.

Also, Hutsady and Anthony, a friend of mine who recommended me this excellent forum told me that he got a free shipping promotion at Malibal for a delivery in Canada.

I'm living in Okinawa, Japan. Are you aware of the shipping cost over there ? UPS is damn expensive, so I'm looking for an alternative.
I'll also go in America from March 8th to March 16th, so maybe I could find a good opportunity, like buying soon the computer online and pick it once in America (San Francisco / Santa Clara).

The Asus there is a bigger screen 17.3" vs 15.6"
It also has other things included like the carbon fiber mod and blu ray which are nice addons but as you probably realize wont increase performance.

If it comes down to which will be faster, the first build you posted will be. The i7 2860QM will outperform the i7 2760QM. Sounds like your computations will take advantage of it.

Getting it shipped to a US address will be your best option. Shipping to Japan can cost several hundred dollars, then you may also need to pay customs fees, duties, local taxes etc. Since you'll be in the states until the 16th that should be enough time to get it to you.

 

Ok thanks for your answer. I'll try to contact Malibal to see if they have a partner in Santa Clara that could keep the laptop for me. Otherwise, I studied 1 year in San Francisco, so I can have it delivered at my school probably.
