gremlins still on the forum.
ill try a repost and not another thread
(posted here as i want a clevo so didnt post in what lappy should i buy)
ok its time to sort out some spec for a new lappy within the next few months.
would prefer a 15" but would need a biggish 320+ hard drive and most prob a ssd so not sure if maybe look at 17" as well so i can have 2 hard drives.
got to be a clevo and backlitso that cuts the models down quite a bit.
dont really want optimus but am i right in thinking the new ivy bridge with backlit are all optimus.
main usage is brousing, gaming and full 1080 AVC HD video editing.
so,
i7 dual or quad
dual 2640M or quad 3720QM or 3820QM
ram 16gb 1333mhz or 1600mhz (whichever is best)
nvidia 670 or 675 or is there better on the horizon. has to be nvidia
also if its optimus can these be doubled up for sli or not
480gb intel 520 series ssd
or if 17" 180gb intel 520 series and wd scorpio black 320gb
a bit wary with just one drive with ssd as had a ocz die after 3 months last year on a work computer. or are intel a lot better.
6230+bluetooth
i will worry about the price when i get to it. its going to be high anyway as im in the uk
good bad or couldnt give a crap![]()
all advice welcome with open arms
thanks
jim

Check my build out, and switch out the processor to the i7-3620QM as well as your RAM for the 16gb and SSD. Then for $100 more you can get the 7970m ATI if you don't want optimus. I am also pretty sure you can shut the optimus off. With these changed should come out somewhere around $2500 (mine was $1650)
Some sites that provide basically the same things are; XoticPC, IBuyPower (under the clevo name), eurocom, reflexnotebook, and pro-star

thanks for the reply. ill check out the price in the uk as of course it will be a lot higher than what you paid.

If backlit KB wasn't a priority I'd say go W150ER as it has 2 HDD bays.
OCZ SSD's have atrocious reliability (worst of the worst), while intel 520's are the best of the best. Have you considered using an mSATA SSD for caching and a 500GB HDD in a P150EM?
If you don't need 3720QM, 3610QM is almost the same but cheaper, don't take it out of consideration.
IBuyPower is shady and has a ton of bad reviews on newegg. Granted, I think they have been getting better lately, but even one report of using copious amounts of craft clue to hold ram in and you can't exactly trust someone anymore. There were a lot more than one report of that, too. Back in the P150HM owner's lounge, some poor fellow bought one from them and got chumped by their customer service agents, who were allegedly rude and unresponsive, not to mention unhelpful and bad at english. I normally don't like to trash resellers/builders, but... Just read some reviews on products of theirs on newegg, mostly good until someone has a problem/has to use CS. -
CPU: 3720QM, if the IB CPUs turn out to be OCable just like in the Alienwares. otherwise a 3610QM should be just fine
GPU: if it really HAS to be an nvidia and as u said u could still wait a few months then id wait and see whats up with the 680M. otherwise u cant do anything wrong with the 7970M. going for a 675M at this point would be a waste imho...
RAM: 1600 should be the standard offer with resellers anyways, so 1333 is basically out of the question. even tho the perf gains are minimal, the additional cost is minimal as well, so why not just go for the faster RAM, right?
SSD: tru that, intel SSDs do have a very high reliability, but so do the Samsung 830 drives. but with those ull save a ton of money and ull get more space at the same time (512 GB going for 518€ vs. Intel 520 480GB for 704€. besides, the samsung is actually faster....
just my 2c

thanks for the reply
i will be buying from the uk
i almost bought a 150 when they first came out. now that model is over a year old im thinking i want the latest spec with backlit keyboard.
also these latest models do they take the caddy for the disc drive. that would solve the problem of 2 HD's internal ssd and WD caddy.
i would prefer a 15" but my only worry is the heat in a 15"
edit:
thanks jaybee
not heard about samsung.
just spent over £500,000/ $750,000 on a new xray machine which is samsung. wonder if i could get some perks from the reps -
i think he was talking about the 150EM, thats the model that just came out. the 150HM is the one thats over a year old ^^
the EM series sports both the latest specs and a backlit kb so ure good on that front. chassis-wise theyre almost identical to the HM series so they definitely support the exact same caddies in the optical drive bays, no problem whatsoever. so yeah, u can install a mSATA SSD, second SSD in the primary SATA port and secondary optical bay port for a regular HDD.
heat is no problem whatsoever in the clevos. if theres one thing clevo does well, its cooling! (and that doesnt mean that the rest is bad, just to make sure im not misunderstood here) heatsink system is identical in EM and HM series and i can say from personal experience: ive never had so much power at such low temps in a laptop before, its downright amazing.
GPU idle: 38-40C / Furmark load after 20 min.: 81C (OCed)
CPU idle: 40s-50s / Prime95 load after 20 min: somewhere in the 70s
thus, games wont even break a sweat on the components

I take it nvidia is for video editing?
I would also recommend an 830 or an M4, intel is too expensive.
Less than 500gb hdd? Anyone even sell those now?
I'm pretty sure the hdd can go in a caddy as before. -
-
i get so confused with the various EM HM AM PM yada yada
at least here in the uk they give models names from each various reseller
once again thanks everyone fot all the feedback -
Ergo all of this, you should totally look into those Samsung SSD's, not only because they are cheaper, but they are faster too!
On a side note, why is it a must for a NVIDIA GPU? I really dont think the 680m will be showing up any time soon, and even when it does I doubt its going to be more capable than the 7970, which you can buy now...
Sure you could go with a GTX670 or 675 and be mostly fine for all current practical purposes- its just not going to give you same lifespan that the 7970 will likely provide you.

I can't see why anybody can be a fanboy of NVidia or ati. Surely it's logical to get the best gpu for the price unless you really need certain features. Both have made dodgy gpus and drivers at times. The only reason I haven't got an NVidia is the stupid rip off pricing. Still, if the manufacturer is more important than performance, your choice.

DJ, I thought you'd know better than to waste money on old-tech cards like 670 and 675.
Also gtx680m is not looking too pretty price-performance wise right now.
Dont wait for something wich is not going to be worth it more than a 7970m. -
-
bad experiance with ati on first ever desktop that has stuck with me even though cards have got so much better over the years.
spose i could be swayed though but it will take time -

How much are you looking to spend? I can get the P151EM with a GTX660M so its new Nvidia technology!
PM if you're interested. -
Hi Scott
thanks for the offer. max £2500 but ive already got a builder but cant say who yet. -
I can understand a bad experience can leave marks for quite some time and it is understandable.
I have ran both ATI/AMD and nVidia and they both seem to impress me.
the only thing I can give to ATI/AMD is the Catalyst Control Center should have the overclocking tool already included and they make enabling crossfire idiot proof. -
iddiot proof, that sounds about right for me
the bad experience almost burnt my house down. desktop ati gpu exploded
i might just buy one of each to compare lol. and no i havnt won the lottery. (this was a joke by the way im not that ruddy rich working for the nhs) -
-
yeh tell me about it and also rebadged 9800GT
my 9800GT died just as i was setting up the clan server for crysis 2
20 minutes after release.
luckily i had the 3rd year warranty so it was replaced the same day with a 260GTX -
