might be a dumb question. from my previous research it just seems you get the bigger screen and the same 15" chassis/motherboard is fitted to the larger 17" laptop. and it's been dumb they don't go ahead and geek out the keyboard to full size buttons on the number pad and arrow keys. has this changed? are the 17" upgraded in any way underneath with better cooling or anything or is it still wishful thinking? i am specifically looking at the 8278/8268 but also looking at other sagers for a possible future purchase in the summer or fall. i wouldn't mind getting a 17" but if it's all the same underneath as the 15 inchers i may as well stick with the 15" models.

The 17 inch as usual gets:

2nd full size 2.5" bay, 17.3" display (duh), 230W PSU, Copper CPU heatsink, more CPU power phases.

    8268 only has 1 2.5in bay and a 180watt psu.
    8258 only has a 180watt psu.
8278 is slightly thinner then the other 17in but gets a 230watt psu.
8298 gets a 230watt psu and is thicker.

Other then that they seem to be identicle. I dont for the life of me know why the 17in laptops with the same hardware get 50watts extra for their psu but whatever.

well, i've delved deeper and the '78 gets an extra 2.5" hdd slot and an extra mini card slot. might be worth the investment. sucker is expensive though. at least the s-versions. i want to deck these suckers out and decking 'em out is gonna cost an arm and a couple of legs. ugh.

I dont understand the S versions as for the same config its more money so there has be a difference somewhere. As for hard drives 3/4 of the SM models have 2 x 2.5 HDD slots and all of them have 2 msata slots. The only one thats different is the 8268 in that it only has 1 2.5 hdd spot.

As for the bays, that'd be correct. Then you'll also have the cosmetic differences with the backlit trackpad on the two of four. The -S models are less expensive base configurations than the non -S counterparts. For example, if you put a 8258 to the same specs as the -S model I believe it's about $180 less for the -S.

I stand corrected on the price, maybe it was the sale not long ago or just a simple misread.

I was also told 15in models arent all copper heatsinks.

Every p series has a copper gpu heatsink. Only the 17 inch models use a copper finned cpu heatsink. The 15 inch use a copper plate with aluminium fins.

I did the math and configs. The s model was $115 cheaper when outfitted the same.

Is this verifiable with pictures? As far as I can tell there are copper heatsinks and can't find mention of aluminum. And is that why some resellers are offering copper upgrades?

Copper cooling upgrade, as far as from us, is adding additional copper heatsinks to the existing cooling setup. It does not replace anything.

^can't seem to find any pictures right now, but yes I do distinctly remember the pictures showed the fins were aluminum (silver in appearance)

How much would that save in terms of cost anyway? Is Clevo seriously cheaping out on something like this?

I do recall that was one of the differences said when the models first hit. Haven't laid hands on one personally as of late to get a more recent look at it, but I know that's how it was initially.
