I kind of assumed it would just work by plugging the second monitor into the HDMI/DVI port and configuring the desktops accordingly via nVidia control panel.

I don't have my laptop yet but would be important to know whether this is the case as well

Yes, that will work. However, I'm not sure if you can run two separate external monitors.

    Have you tried it, trvelbug?

I'm pretty sure that this is not possible, as the DVI and HDMI port share the same interface on the card. You can run either external with the laptops inbuilt panel, but not 2 externals. The D900C had this ability as it had DVI and VGA which ran separately and could be used as 2 externals (but not with the internal panel as well), but I don't think and of the newer gen ones can.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

You could use a DualHead2Go, expensive but they do the job
