I have a fairly dated system (NP8170) with a 6990m and it's starting to turn off when playing games.
temps used to reach up to 92c and still be fine, now hitting 84-85c and it'll auto power off, no blue screen no event logs (was logging the temps using gpu-z).
tried reformatting from windows 8.1- windows 7 back to 8.1, all using the latest drivers (which used to work fine).

did furmark for 5 mins reaching 92c and it's fine, so I'm not sure what's causing the shutdowns.

also cleaned the fans/heatsinks/repasted with prolimatech pk-1 (also got a new set of fans from china to replace the old ones).

games played are hawken, mechwarrior online.

also this started to happen after a blackout in our area for a few hours, but i have a spare brick and the laptop wasn't on when it happenned.

It could be a spike travelled though and has damaged the power circuitry in the system if both bricks work fine, is the battery drained at all when you bring the system back up?

    Nope, it's at full capacity.

The ultimate test is furmark + prime at the same time.

Oh man, running both of those programs at once can really fry your system...monitor the temperatures closely and dont let it overheat! :S

Unless it's faulty thermal reporting then it could be electrical as Meaker alluded to. If you're going to try those programs, watch your temps!

Just an update, it was faulty ram that only got detected by using memtestx86 running for 3 hours.

Everything now works fine minus a 4gb ram chip

    Thanks all for helping!

This was pretty much exactly what happened to my D900F, before I started noticing issues with amount of RAM being shown and then it seemingly died. I wonder if I swap out the RAM in it if it'll work again? Would be fairly cheaper than getting an entire new mobo/ram/gpu/etc setup to drop the i7 in.

Best to test it first, would be a waste if you bought new ones and it wasn't the problem

Well getting the desktop hardware would be far more expensive. But it'd be nice if RAM was all it needed and I could fix it up and use it as a light gaming rig for my sister's L4D2 and Terraria etc as well as a bit of a media storage server for the house.

Would be a nice system for either of those for the price of a ram stick.
