I have an external hd, with both USb and e-sata... it works fine with usb but when I connect e-sata to e-sata on the Np8170 , the harddrive wont come up. Is it a driver issue with the computers motherboard, or can it be because i have 2 primary harddrives on the computer?

Also does the Np8170 have an intergrated videocard that I can switch to?

What kind of external drive is it? Is it a single or a dual drive? The e-sata on these models doesn't support port multiplier, so you can only have a single drive on an external e-sata connection.

And no, there is no integrated graphics card on the 8170. You have discrete GPU output only. (What you're asking about is switchable graphics, which aren't available on these models)

Its a single external harddrive. My Np8170 has 2 internal harddrives. Can that be the reason the e-sata external is not showing up when I connect it, or can it be a motherboard issue?

It shouldn't make a difference either way. The e-sata port is a separate SATA header on the motherboard. It's possible the port is faulty though. Did you check in Bios on boot and under disk management (right click my computer > manage > disk management) to see whether it's showing up at all?

If it works on other machines and doesn't show up in either of these places, there's a possibility your e-sata port is faulty.

Well, do your external eSATA enclosure support Power over eSATA? If yes, did you use the eSATAp cable for that?
If your external enclosure does not support Power over eSATA, then you have to use the DC plug in your external enclosure to supply power

I think either way you need the ac adapter plugged into the external harddrive in order for it to be powered than you can connect either a USB or E-sata cable to the computer...

It worked fine with the Np8150 before i returned it to xoticpc.com because of a dead pixel. Now I just got the Np8170 from them and this port is messed up. Is there anything else I an try? Using USB 2.0 for transfers is extremeley slow.
