well, I was planning to use my lappie as a music server (via external USB harddrives) and stream audio via WLAN and a Squeezebox.
It will also be used as a skype phone connection...

    Question:
if I never shut of my laptop (a 5760) how will this affect the life expectancy?
Of course, I could have a piece where single critical components (like PSU caps ) are on the way to go prematurely but that is a risk I am willing to take.

    conditions:

screen off. (not to wear down backlightning)

battery life non-issue (probably gonna remove it and keep in frigde)

maximum cooling (it will be located in my office room, and noise is no issue)
    possibly cooling pads aswell

    ambient normal temp

Will it crack up after a year or so? Or can I hope for atleast 2-3 years survival?

Otherwise I guess I have to buy some used P4 Dell, IBM whatever office desktop and use as a server...

I've had my Sager NP5320 for 11 months now, and has been on 24/7. Never had an issue. I use it on a cooling pad, and I rarely use battery. I leave the screen on.

That said, it should be good for a long time as long as you take care of it.

the average lifespan for notebooks are approx 5-7 years... as long as you dont drop it or anything

the average lifespan for desktops are approx 3-5 years... as long as one makes sure that there is sufficient cooling and shuts it down when not really using it.

notebooks are engineered really well to last longer.

Agreed.. if you want a server, then build a server, not a laptop.
It's silly to spend 2200+ on a laptop that is never going to be moved.
You can build an SFF server for half that and it'd be almost as portable.
