what laptop and what operating system.
if you want to do a clean install of your operating system as long as you have the license key you can download it from nbr but we need the above info first.

If you use Windows 8, you can try the built-in Reset. Follow these steps:

    1. Open the Charms Bar (Windows Key + C)
    2. Go: Settings > Change PC Settings > General

And now you can choose between:

    A. Refresh your PC without affecting the files ("Soft Reset")
    B. Remove everything and reinstall Windows ("Hard Reset")

You won't need to reinsert your CD Key after the reset, the PC stays activated. Now you have a clean Windows 8, without drivers, programs and "documents, music, videos, photos" (if you choosed B).

    -------

PS: IMHO this is an awesome feature in Windows 8, I remember me in Windows 7's Era formatting and installing the system, a hundred times.

    half way there :)

you can get windows 7 > http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-digitalriver-windows-7-sp1-13-languages.html as long as you have the licence key. bottom of lappy or under the battery.

the reason i need to know the model is so to point you in the direction of the correct drivers.
can you tell me the clevo model number on the bottom or take a picture of it.

if you cant find it download HWinfo64 in my signature below and run it. it will show you the model number on there.

    edit:
another thing ive just remembered, did you pay for the backup acronis program which was £25 which will have a clean install of your copmputer on a hidden partition. if you did try F10 or F11 (cant remember which it is) on startup. if it takes you to the acronis setup then just follow the instructions and it will return your lappy to the day you got it with a clean install. that might be why you didnt get a operating disc.

nope, that numbers no good. it would help knowing if its a 15" /17" /18"
    it will have
    Model Number M57TU / M860TU / M980NU /X8100 or something like that.
from kobalts old range going back 4-5 years you had the:
    Mojave / Nexus / Comanche / G860-870-875 / GS510-710 / G150-170 /G190

my nexus 15" is 5 years old now and still going strong.

worldwide model/serial numbers have always been screwed up and it would make life a lot easier if everyone kept the base number but they dont.

also there's a fair number of programs that can retrieve the current licence keys you have if you don't have for example the win 7 key in the bottom of the lappy.

    thats the one i needed.

heres the drivers for your model G870/NP8760 Software Upgrade

as M3ezu said, if you cant find your key you could try magic jelly keyfinder > KeyFinder | Magical Jelly Bean

now weve got this far next is the reason to do a clean install. is the hard drive faulty and running slow or has it got a virus or something like that.

Thanks! Um the reason is that its running really slow. But it's weird. Like a virus but my scanner doesn't pick it up. Basically my computer becomes super slow at doing the simplest of things - even opening chrome. Checked processes and nothing is out of the ordinary. Done a virus, malware and spyware scan. Used CC cleaner, defragmented, disc clean up. Everything I could think of but nothing :( The laptop is now 4 years old...dunno it that may just be the reason :S

could be one or two bad sectors on your hard drive which happened to me.

download HD Tune from sig below and run a scan and see if it picks anything up.
two bad sectors and mine could take 3-4 minutes to boot and then crash a lot.

my m860tu runs a bit slower now but not drastically slow. age and amount of crap on it can help towards this but if its strugling to even open crome then something is not right.
before a clean install its best to try and find the cause.

another great bit of hard drive software is hard disc sentinel which you can try the trial version (cant link to it as at work).

hope you get it sorted soon

Thank you so much for your help! I've downloaded HD tune and am running that. Looks like there are a number of errors. Hope it can fix those. Also in health it says "Reallocated Sector Counter -status: warning and current pending sector - status: warning. Dunno if that means something :O

    most probably fecked.
not seen them errors before. mine only had 2 bad sectors and it caused no end of problems. new hard drive was the only option.

    edit

heres the hard drive sentinel trial version http://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php which has more scan options than hd tune

Ok so I ran a diagnosis and this stuff came up. Dunno if you can tell what is causing my computer to lag. Seems there are a few errors at the bottom which I don't understand.

reinstall windows. closest thing you'll get to a "factory reset."

    that does sound scary hardware-ish.

So best bet is to just buy a new HDD? Is that error what's causing the massive lag spikes? Took me about 10 minutes to load windows media player yesterday. The lag only happens at random times. Sometimes i'll be using the laptop normally and them boom. Pretty much have to then sit for about 10-15 minutes and wait for it to play out. Shutting down won't work so the only other way would be to take the plug out :(

most probably. but it could be a number of things and a new hd will help but might still be slower than when you first got it.
i had all sorts of errors and freeze ups, even in safe mode. then next day it would load and run ok for a while and then crash. amazing that just 2 bad sectors could cause that on a 320gb western digital black.
got a new drive the same and all hunky dorey now.

all youve got to decide now is do you buy a standard 7200 or a ssd. then when your lappy does totally die you can use the ssd in another laptop.

im guessing a 4 year old lappy will be sataII so not sure what happens if you put a sataIII in it. will it work????

    over to the experts.

no. your best bet at this point is to reinstall windows, which should solve all of your problems with 99% certainty. there's about a 1% chance that there's anything wrong with your hardware/hard drive. jaybee and i were simply observing how bizarre of an error and potentially serious the ATAPI errors at the end of your log are.

    yes, at SATA II speeds.

Ok will read up on how to reinstall windows! Thanks! If that doesn't work I can always buy a new HD.

Yeah all SATA generations are compatible with each other, it just runs at whatever speed the slowest port of component is.
