g-sync on laptop monitors dead/Battery life

the clevo P960ED/Sager NP8961 and all new rtx-laptops don't have g-sync or even adaptive sync anymore and it makes no sense to me. I know that adpative sync is best for when refresh rates are super low but still it's sad to see. Also is the iGPU disabled on all of the CPUs now?

I am asking because I'd like to know how they get 3+hrs of battery life, if it's using optimus or if it's just using the full nvidia gpu with the standard "browsing the internet watching videos" etc for the battery life estimates.

I am going to no matter where I go get slower ddr4 ram to save some $ as what's the point of paying for ram that fast since it's not going to be the limiting factor in terms of FPS I did a similar thing with my current laptop the NP8150 that I've had and been using for ~8yrs I got 1333mhz ram instead of 1666mhz as there's no igpu and the dGPU doesn't need it and it's not worth wasting the money on it.

 

The PB series (83xx) does. Since these are thicker more performance oriented devices it makes more sense.

 

The iGPU is enabled on most current models as many have Optimus, the exceptions being the P750TM and P775TM1. We haven't verified battery life on the P9x models just yet, though.

 

Similar to last gen really in optimus mode.

 

My laptop is too old to have the iGPU not disabled and since I'm primarily on linux I guess I'll have to deal with xrun until nvidia gets off their ass and enables PRIME render offloading on linux AKA optimus except not windows since the FLOSS driver supports it just fine but not all of the GPU features that the proprietary driver does so I'll have to hack together a solution until they finally get it done. It's one reason I held off getting a new laptop until it was basically impossible to wait any longer as I knew I'd have to deal with optimus.

P.S. I have had this sager right now for 8(going on 9) years. Two years ago I now have had to disable turbo, and set the GPU to never go higher than 2D mode when I'm doing some kinda game if I don't want the thermals to reach 90*C and have it stuck in Desktop Mode the rest of the time even with new repastings it's only fixes the problem for ~7mo before the thermals start skyrocketing all over again. I guess it's time to finally retire the old thing.

At this point, I get the feeling that Nvidia is simply waiting for Intel to get off their collective arses and support FreeSync/Adaptive Sync in their iGPUs (which they committed to years ago). Hopefully Raja at the head of their GPU department can make that happen with the next die shrink CPUs.
The second Intel supports FreeSync, any Optimus device will get support automatically. It wouldn't surprise me if it could even be done in software.
In which case the whole Mobile G-Sync situation/dilemma goes away entirely. Mobile G-Sync can be re-badged to "G-Sync Compatible" as it should be (since it's basically FreeSync already) and Intel supporting FreeSync solves the Optimus/Hybrid issue.

Or better yet, if AMD can lift whatever restrictions are in place with their mobile H series chips and we get AMD H-series laptops with Nvidia dGPU in Hybrid mode which would also work.

I hate to say it, but as much as people like to rag on Nvidia, at least they shoot first and ask questions later with some of their more innovative ideas. With new tech somebody has to step up and "just do it".
Nvidia put G-Sync out there (Gen1 G-Sync modules were JANKY as hell too!), then developed it into a serious technology which spurred VESA to get AdaptiveSync/FreeSync off the ground.
Then once the technology was solid Nvidia officially added support for FreeSync (which I honestly did not expect at all).

The opposite of that is VXAO (voxel ambient occlusion) with the Maxwell release, which basically failed out of the gate. However, much of that effort then went into RTX/RTAO (ray traced ambient occlusion) which looks bloody amazing (in Metro Exodus).

 

The optimus drivers are irrelevant to free sync support, that is only down to Intel and their driver.
