The bad thing about it is that I would need you to test my type of screen next to one you`re so generous to praise in order to know if it`s that much better...
I guess it would take more than words to make me drop 3-400$ for a new screen, since for that money I can get a 24inchLCD...

Zfactor, could you do me a favor in the meantime... Could you ask your friend what parts I will need to mod my Vostro 1700 over to the LG screen? I want to start looking around for the right parts, and possibly order them (minus the screen), since I plan on doing the upgrade on my own even if you decide to keep your LG screen.

I'm having a difficult time finding any information about whether I will need a new video flex cable, and which one. I imagine I would need a new inverter, since you mentioned your LG was rather dark until you swapped out the inverter, but those are much easier to find than the video flex cable, especially for the Vostro 1700.

    Thanks Z!

i would need the model number of your screen before i could ask him about it. he doesnt have a list of what is in each but he can cross ref the model numbers..

Ah, that makes sense Z. I ordered some pry tools to open up the casing earlier in the week. I'll open up the laptop when they arrive so I can give you the model number of the current screen.

Just to confirm. The 5793 wuxga screens are all the same? Do I have to worry about getting a crap model screen?

well it will have to be modified to work. the cable will have to be changed and the lcd is thinner than the oem one and the holes for the brackets do not line up. so in order to use it new brackets would need to be made and then somehow mounted to the stock ones or somehow new holes would have to be drilled into the factory arms.. imo not easy without a full dissasemble to get them totally off the notebook.

there would also need to be something made for the back of the lcd like shim to hold it foward or it will not sit flush against the front lcd bezel..

the cable on our lcd in not a ribbon style going to the invertor. its a small white plug with 22 awg or so wires coming to it. this new one uses a flat ribbon cable instead. im sure it can be done but how much work one would be willing to go through to do it.. may not simply be worth it..

i can not power it on to look at it due to the difference in cables. so im not sure how nice is really is. im positive as i said it can be done.. but im not sure i want to sacrifice my system for the duration of time it may take to get it all done since i use my system every day..

im going to call around tomm and see if i can find a plug i would need for the ribbon cable. if i can get a empty plug for it i could im sure convert it over to the wires in the notebook... it does not need different power or anything special since it uses its own "inverter" for power

one of my major suppliers is closed right now and they will be open tomm morning. im going to call my rep and see what he can find. the hardest part imo is going to be the actual mounting of it to make it sit flush and look right..at least this one is not wider than the arms.. it fits inside with a bit of room to spare..

    ZFactor,

I opened up my laptop display today, and the screen included with my Vostro 1700 is a Samsung LTN170X2-L03. The Videocard in the laptop is a Geforce 8600m.

If you, and your rep don't mind- could you cross reference the display and see if I need to replace the inverter, data flex cable, or if my parts are compatible with your LG screen. I'm still interested in purchasing your display if you still prefer your AUO upgrade.

    Thanks ZF!
