performance-wise?
i just wanna gauge the performance... i know that, spec wise, it's equal to GTX 460 SE, but i know it's not near that...

Maybe desktop 450
-
Certainly above GTS 450. GTX 460M is a slightly downclocked GTS 450 with 192 bit memory bus, so maybe 5% behind GTS 450 but you can always oc. GTX 470M should be pretty close to GTX 460 SE, 7-10% behind? You should also be able to oc the GTX 470M to stock GTX 460 SE clocks.
-
ah, say what overclock program can i use and what clocks should i OC it to?
-
EVGA Precision is pretty nice - but might have to wait till GTX 460 SE is supported, otherwise dump bios and edit it yourself. Some people have problems with Ntune. You can oc to 650/1300, which is stock GTX 460 SE clock. Temps and power wise this should be no problem (maybe you'll need to up the voltage a bit?). The chip can certainly handle those clocks.
-
ah, how do you up the volts?
-
Probably your best bet if you ask nicely. But try to oc the card without upping the voltage first, should yield some good results.
-
ah ok, what program for stability?
-
Furmark if you wanna be sure and to check out temps. ATITool might also be an option to detect artifacts. But generally just run Vantage a couple of times (and/or play your fav new game for a couple of hours) and check for artifacts yourself. However, with those new chips, I think you will run into a power shortage before you exceed the limits of the chip (if your overvolting).
-
OCCT is the best option for stability testing now. It even has CUDA memory stressing for nVidia cards.
-
470m is exactly the same as desktop 450.
It is as if you have a desktop 450 inside a laptop; -
And you should not check the price of desktop 450 if you don't want to rage.
-
LOL, you should not compare between desktops and laptops Gpu's Prices unless you want a heart stroke, unless we are talking about the quadro series ^_^
-
why would i rage? laptop parts are always harder to make due to that they have to somehow shove them into a tiny amount of space depending on what laptop it may be.
-
Neol, how do you feel after spending money on 740qm, 45nm cpu, when 32nm quad core gonna launch in 5 january 2011 ?
I myself am looking into buying a laptop before that date, and i just can't justify gettin a mobile 45 nm part (meaning mobile quads i7s), unless im looking into a lga 1366 platform(clevo x7200)
Since i dont think i can hold it until 5 january, i think ill be gettin the x7200 with the i7 950. -
yea yea, honestly, the core i7 740qm is way more than what i need and will suit me fine. Can't always get the latest whizzbang, there's always something new.
-
A satisfied customer !
For me, the more the merrier. -
Except hardware manufacturers always put something on the horizon so we can never wait for the latest stuff
-
No, they are not. The MXM card in itself is harder to make, but by now the design is pretty standard.
I am not sure how they pick the cores for the mobile cards, maybe someone with more knowledge on the matter might tells us. But as far as I know, these are desktop cores which have been tuned for the mobile market, either through the BIOS like the 480M or with some minor hardware tweaks for the cards of higher volume (generally the middle and lower range).
So I am pretty sure that the price to produce a 470M is maybe a bit more than the price to produce a desktop GTX 460. However, there is a very high probability that these cores have been specially picked from the cores of the desktop cards because they performed better at lower speeds and generated less heat, thus making them suitable for mobile gaming cards. -
How? The 470M has 288 shaders, the GTS 450 has 192 shaders. GTS 450 is clocked higher, but still those cards are not equal. Or did you mean GTX 460M equals a GTS 450?
I'm also no expert on this matter, but it was already discussed that stability at lower voltage levels is a sign of quality. Remember the P series of Intel CPUs. They could run at lower voltages, because Intel picked the chips with the highest quality. So you cannot turn any GPU chip into a mobile version. You have to find chips that have a high quality and can run stable at lower voltage levels. The process of findings those chips takes time and naturally they are more rare than normal chips. If you focus on producing energy-efficient chips in the first place (like AMD did) you will not have much trouble finding those chips (which is why the GTX 460M and Mobility Radeon HD 5870 are cheaper). If you have a power hungry design, you will only find very few of those prime quality chips (which is why GTX 480M is so damn expensive).
In general I agree though. I'm pretty sure both Mobility Radeon HD 5870, the GTX 460M and especially the GTX 470M are overpriced. -
lol to be honest, i wanted a QX9300 but then though why not wait for the I7 and then waited for the I7 and the SB is near and people keep telling me to wait but im tired of waiting because if i keep on doing this i will never buy a laptop, every month or two there is a new technology, on the other hand im using this notebook as a gaming platform and a calculating power for my study in university (physics student), and since we already have a CLAY system that do all the heavy ones, all teh calculations that i need are really tiny and i belive an i5 or even i3 would do the job, so unless there is a new GPU that lunch in 5 january 2011 im as happy as i can be ^_^.
oh and one more thing, if im not mistaken the MAIN differrence between the SB and the I's series is the 32nm-45nm which results in decent decrease in the watt and "as advertised or rumered" 20% increase in performance but lets be real that increase will only be in the highend 9xx series which already waaaaay more expensive and more than enough power for me
so im feeling pretty good and you shouldn't go for the i7 950 unless you really really have an intensive calculations or application that needs it and if you do then you better wait for the SandyBridge
-
hey, can the CPU be changed or is it glued on to the socket? hoping for changable!
-
The cpu can most definitely be changed, instructions to do so are in the service manual (in my sig) if you are interested.
-
If you look at the performance desktop 450 gives, and compared it to the 470m, you will find they are pretty equal. Yah, the 470m has more shaders, but clocks are lower.

gtx 470m is be roughly around a gts 450 at stock however with some tweaking it could easily surpass the gtx 260 by around 10%+ depending on ur OC
-
what kind of tweaking? what OC program? what clocks did you OC it to?
gtx 470m equal to what desktop card?
