I'm trying to pick what hard-drive to throw into my new Sager M860TU when it arrives next week. But basically I want to get a 320gig hard-drive, I read through various benchmarks about speed but while speed is important I care noise, vibration and heat equally. So in saying that I'm trying to decide firstly if there's a severe increase in the latter 3 and decrease in speed if I got a 5400rpm or if not which 7200rpm drive gives best speed for given heat, noise, vibration:

    7K320 320GB 7200RPM
    Seagate 7200.3 320GB
    Scorpio Black WD3200BEKT 320GB 7200 RPM

    5K320 320GB 5400 RPM
    Scorpio WD3200BEVT 320GB 5400 RPM
    ST9320320AS 320GB 5400 RPM

    Thanks in advance all

Some of those temps seem a little high...hmm...either you have insulated hands or your laptop is dispersing the heat away from you

I have seen some other temp readings but thanks for actually posting some real world browsing/post-Crysis (since I'll be doing that soon ;))

i have the seagate 320 7K2. i put this in myself and love it. it makes no noise/vibrations that i can tell of. The head is totally fine, normal browsing is 47-53(47 atm no cooler). And the hightest ive got it to is 59 after 4+ hours of gaming without a cooler. gamig with a cooler it sits around 52-53

Mausimo, where'd you get your seagate? I'm in Calgary but I travel to Edmonton for work pretty often but I'm struggling to find someone local so I'm going to be buying it online...unless you have some awesome assistance available :)

I bought mine from SATACOMPUTER. It was on sale at the time for 177$. They are a local PC store that i have bought satellite/computer gear from before. Personally in my opinion, they are a very good computer store, with very knowledgable employees. They are definitely a smaller company, however they provide great customer service and a personal feel.

On the other hand BCOM computers has it also, they have 2 location in edmonton. They are a bigger company that i have bought from for many years, however they have switched owners i believe and i hate going there. I probably will never buy from them again, their sales associates are not knowledgable at all, compared to their previous staff and they are friggin snobby.

Either of these companies have it, personally i would suggest SATACOMPUTERS, their warranty is pretty darn good, and then you also get a 3 year manufacture warranty from seagate i believe.

    Enjoy! :D

That's one of the notable things unique to Seagates, so if this matters, don't get a Seagate. It has a patented feature that moves the drive heads around (on/off) park so they don't get stuck, or something of the sort. The Seagate whirr-click when idling is normal. It's not the hard drive "working" but it's their idle mechanism.

Run the notebook in silent mode when idling or browsing the web etc, and that'll shave like 10C off those temps. Make sure you install SATA drivers (esp if you're installing your own XP) properly, and use a Zalman cooler. It'll be mid to low 40s then.

While I will be getting a cooler (Notepal Infinite since it has rear fans) I won't have it with me constantly so I can't rely on it to lower my temps
