mine has a odd smell to it and man there is some hot air coming from the vent behind the heatsink... i checked the thermal compound by pulling the heatsink back off and it was 100% a nice even coat. i used a bit more than i normally would simply because the heatsink base was def pretty rough and i was afraid if i lapped it much it may not seat right due to the removal of material..

it doesnt smell like anything burning or anything like that but it def smells like it has some smell to it like when metal gets hot or something.. im a bit worried about that..

I think its a natural smell as these components are used for first time. That will go away in a few days.

Savour it as much as you can before it goes.

My 8800M came with some sort of thermal compound. Not sure if it was AS5 or shinetsu or something else, though, as it was unlabeled in a plastic syringe. My card idles at around 37-38 so it must be working heh.

Heh well I figured since it came with the card direct from Sager it was ok to use. I did check the temperatures pretty regularly after first installing it to make sure, though; it's too much an investment to fry the first day I have it!
