I am having an issue where I have to turn down the gamma to prevent some images from showing 'artifacts' in dark/black areas. The downfall to this is that now everything is very dark. Is this one of the unfortunate perks of having a glossy screen? I don't have this issue on either of my matte desktop monitors.
My notebook is a NP8170 with a 6990M.

Here's one good example of the issue I'm having. Tell me if you can or can't see the lighter, pixelated areas at the base of the fingers and around the edges of the image...

I fixed it. I had to do as you did and turn the brightness down to -20 in CCC. Didn't realize it was too bright until I started seeing horrible shading and image gamut issues.
have to turn gamma all the way down
