hey guys after reading about this im set on ordering this system from OCuk but need some help regarding the os

Im going to get p8400, 4 gb ram, 320 7000 hdd (this was after reading chaz's posts about the cpu not bottlenecking and the ram and hdd being a priority in systems as they bottleneck)

my screen res will be the 1650 screen (wsxga)...

regaring the os i want to get xp but i read that with xp it is not possible to adjust dpi (whereas with vista you can up the dpi easily) is this true? will i even need to up the dpi on a 1650 screen? Can I have your opionions please? this is an office laptop as a priority and gaming for my free time.

any other comments about my config is appreciated, thanks

oh oops, i must have misunderstood, so shall i go with xp then? or shall i just get 64 vista (since i got 4gb ram)? driver issues are rare now correct?
    thanks

thanks nirvana, i think im going to get vista 64 actually cause it would make sense with the 4gb ram, i was just worried that i couldnt install my printer if drivers werent supported...but i guess i could check that.

any other criticisms of the config? am i correct in saying that a 7000 320 hdd is more of a priority than say upgrading to a p8600 cpu?

I'd go with xp, for a performance increase, especially noticable during gaming (what was it? around 10%?) and 4gigs of ram isn't a noticeable difference from 3. Your choice though.

    @tarentum

i know 3 gb makes more sense for xp but on Ocuk there is only an option for 2gb or 4gb :(

10% increase! why lol? is vista that much of a resource hog hehe?

I'm sorry. I used to be a staunch XP fanatic, but since I've been using, optimizing and growing accustomed to Vista 64, it does everything better for me.

Sorry, I can't go back. It's just not possible. :D Get Vista Ultimate 64, it's REALLY good.

Oh no, you don't get better performance or at least, its not said. All I know is that you are authorized to open more TCP/IP connections with Ultimate. What's the use of that? You can have more connections using Torrents but it still gets limited to ruin the sharing. You just get fancy features like backup and DreamScene... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx

Does it worth it? No, when I bought it, it was $90 more expensive. Now its more reasonnable.

Just gives you everything that Vista has to offer, the benefits of home premium as well as business, its little extra tibits like bitlocking security as well as animated wallpapers (which, if you are a creative individual, can put you in the right frame of mind to work).

My parents have home premium and I can tell you that I feel better using ultimate....its the full vista, you get everything with it. :)

thanks for the info guys, im going to go ahead and order soon,
just one last thing .... regarding the hdd and cpu...its a better idea to get a better hdd than spend money on the cpu because a faster hdd makes more of a difference than a faster cpu?

what im saying is should i get p8400 and 320 7200 hdd
    or p8600 and 320 5400 hdd ??

    got for p8600 and 320 5400 hdd

the CPU is faster and the HDD performs as fast as previous generation 7200rpm drives. :)

    @gophn

the 7200rpm drive is not previous gen its a Western digital scorpio 320GB 7200 rpm HDD
surely thats faster than a 320HDD at 5400 rpm?

    1) 5K320 and 7K320 have no more than few seconds difference
    2) the HDD won't affect the games.

    ^^ correct.

the HDD speed does not affect performance overall... just load times (which is marginal at best.. especially for notebook HDDs).

the CPU speed does affect the performance.

    what "says that its on"?

you should open the bottom panel (it wont void any warranties) and see if the wireless module is physically there or not.

it should be next to the RAM.

thanks a lot livesoft....cool those are all the drivers but there is 2 options/parts for each driver (underlined 1 &2 in blue) in the link you just gave im guessing i need them both?

I just want to make sure I get the right drivers cause that would mess things up so just waiting for a reply from someone whos done this

btw i just played COD4 maxed out and 1650 resolution is just beautiful!

These are the mirrors server. You can choose to download from Server 1 or Server 2. Its the same file on 2 different servers so if one server is slow or down, you can try the other one.

I just tried Cod4 max and I'm lagging at 10fps...I have AA 4x. I just don't like it when people don't mention this setting.
