sorry to be blunt but when you ask the questions could you give as much info as possible, like what mouse you have. saves us having to ask more questions before we can answer.

honest answer is i dont know. mouse buttons are normaly for gaming shortcuts.

i also have a razer abyssus mouse and it only has the basic left and right button with no side buttons at all (mine might be an older model).

why not just use the start button

well the reason why i am asking is this ...

say if i upgrade to windows 8 and every time i need to go to the desktop i need to press the windows key ...

    thats rather troublesome ...

so if i can map one of the mouse button to the windows key ...

my hands does not have to go hunting for the keyboard ...

all i do is just move the mouse and press the windows mapped button ...

    simple

    :)

i think the only option is to buy a better mouse with more buttons. i think the mouse only has the basic left right and mouse wheel and cant be mapped unless it came with a disc with a control panel to set it up.

go buy a logitec G700 and with the software control panel you can map any key by just pressing it (as far as i know). never heard of anyone wanting to map the window key but i guess it will work (maybe) :)

no idea. i can only give advice on what mouse i use. you will need to check the tech spec for the G400 to see if it has control panel software to set it up. if it has then yes it will work BUT i dont know about the windows key as its one on its own.
