I was thinking of picking up a Sager/clevo for a family member who likes to game and i was wondering how loud they are. portability is not so much a big deal since it will remain stationary but noise is. I dont want something that sounds like an air conditioner

depends on which models.
the Clevo D901C (Sager 9262) is probably the quietest high-end notebook on the market... since it has the best cooling design.
the Clevo M570TU (Sager 5797) and M860TU (Sager 8660) will have sound... like every other high-end gaming notebooks.... except Clevo has the "Slient Mode" feature to make things silent when you are not gaming.
you cannot escape fan noise since high-end system require the fans to spin up enough to properly cool the system. -
gaming laptops are loud
-
The Sager NP9262, when you put the fans on full blast (FN+1), is loud. Not sure about the NP8660 or the NP579x. but the NP2096 is rather quiet, even when gaming.
-
the four full sized fans and large heatsink/pipes makes it so that the fans wont need to spin up that fast to sufficiently cool everything.... as compared to other high-end systems with only 2 or so fans to do the same job.
it is quieter since its components are not as powerful to cool down. -
I can report that my NP8660 is "loud". When idling, the fan keeps spinning at a decent rate. So this laptop is much more louder than most laptops. The noise is not high-pitched so it's not really annoying but when I try to study, I put it to sleep or turn it off because it makes "too much" noise for me; I can't stand that much noise while studying. Also, the silent mode is not the best solution because, in a silent room, you can still hear the computer working (hard drive working, cpu whining). Plus, when watching a video, the heat builds up and hard drive reached 64. But I guess that's normal for the power it packs.

I always have music playing so it drowns out the noise from the fans
. I also have a Cryo LX and that thing is way louder than the notebook itself. I have to say that the fans aren't that loud, at least not as loud as the DISK DRIVE
. Man that thing really spins up and it can really sound like a helipad in my room sometimes.

If you love to game, buy a Sager/Clevo
If you need performance, buy a Sager/Clevo
If you need expandability buy a Sager/Clevo
If you need the most efficient cooled notebook on earth, buy a Sager/Clevo
If you live in a library or a dark cellar and are worried about your decibel levels, DONT buy a Sager/Clevo. -
I use this in class. No one seems to mind the noise of me gaming in the back of the room.

The on/off during idle IS very noticable otherwise, and oddly louder than when gaming. In fact, my M860TU's in silent mode the majority of the time (web browsing, etc) that I use it.
To compare: the M860TU's fans on full blast (it's either off or full blast usually) are about the noise level of it's dvd-drive spinning up, and both are a bit quieter than my Zalman NC2000 cooler on max. My hard drive is quieter than any of the above (5400rpm). -
D901c is by far the most silent laptop 4 gamers i have ever own. And the king of notebook too, in term of "brute force"
Its really an amazing desktop replacement. -
BigCityHunter you are very right it very silent really and its not just laptop this machine is mobile desktop pc with best cooling system

I own the 5797 and when gaming I'm much too occupied to even notice the fan noise. My old desktop is much much louder than this thing.
