Recently bought an NP8652 and it's been working wonderfully, but I've been running into MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION blue screens everytime I try to play a Source Engine game. MSI has released a bios update that supposedly fixed this, and I was wondering if anyone else with this issue on a Sager has found a solution.

Have you checked for a bios update from your reseller? Do any other games have this issue?

I would strip back the graphics drivers and try the latest intel set (on the intel website) followed by the latest GPU drivers after that.

Latest BIOS for your system is 1.05.06, latest EC 1.05.02...with that info go and ask them again.i_pk_pjers_i and Bullrun like this. -

It seems to mostly be on Steam games like CS GO and Dota 2 that people have been reporting (mostly on MSI threads), or also office that is having the same issue possibly. Since there aren't a lot of broadwell models from Clevo out there right now, it probably just isn't as well documented as MSI's issue was, because of that fact. What version of BIOS / EC does yours say you have?
-
This only fixable via a BIOS update, happens in Office 2016 as well. My buddy has a MSI laptop with a broadwell chip in it too, before the bios update they released this week it would BSOD the moment he opened up office 2016, after the update there are no more BSOD's Sager/Clevo need to fix their stuff, MSI did it.

I completely understand the logic here, that Clevo (Sager isn't Clevo) need to sort this out. However, this fix needs to be led by Intel and we have been talking to them about it since last week when the problem was first reported.
Only a couple of Clevo customers took the Broadwell models (including us), so there is a very low number of people experiencing issues as reported in this thread. Sager will have advised that the BIOS is up to date because that's true - Clevo do not have a fix yet but that's because Intel need to sort it out first i.e. they need to explain the fix to Clevo that Clevo then will impliment in an update.
Intel are aware that they need to do this, because we have been in contact with our tech reps since last week and so the wheels are in motion -

Intel needs to battle Clevo to hire you. I think Intel has a little more bank. -

That would mean he may not be as free to do the mods

Hi Prema, I have the same problem with my Clevo and I happened to stumble onto this post. I was trying to extract the .rar file to my laptop but it requires a password. I didn't see it on your webiste so I was wondering if you could privately message me (or you could post it here if you don't mind) with the password. I only have one question: As the problem is related to the laptop's CPU, why is there a difference between the two versions you have (2 different GPUs)? As soon as I can extract and test out the update I will let you know the result asap
Thank you so much for posting this fix as it's been stopping me from playing my favorite game for a long time
(if this could really fix it!)
EDIT: After a further look into your website I have found the password! However, I am still puzzled as to how to really run the file. Could you please (if you don't mind) send me the instructions for the particular version of the 970M? (in particular, the following two lines:
- Create an MS-DOS USB flash-drive (To do so we recommend the Software'Rufus').
- Add all files without folder directly to the root of the flash-drive.
Did you mean I need to add all the files in the extracted folder to the flash-drive? What about the "root" of the flash-drive?
I'm sorry as I'm writing this at 4am so I can't really do more research on this. Once I can have more time I promise to look further into your instructions. Once again, thank you very much!Last edited: Oct 14, 2015 -
1. There are two Mod versions because Clevo uses different BIOS' for each model depending on its GPU.

Hi Prema, I've installed your mod and played my first game of Dota 2 in a month. Glad to see there was no more BSOD appearing during games. Thank you so very much!

Does this bios just fix the bsod or does it have all the extra features as well?

What "extra" features would we be missing out of curiosity? I'd much rather not have BSOD over features tbh.

Anyone aware if this issue as now been "officially" fixed by manufacturers and/or CLEVO? I bought an Eurocom M5 Pro recently (which is a P650SE) with a 970M and and was freely bumped up to an i7-5700HQ from an i7-4720HQ. Can't complain about anything except that after installing Office 2016 this weekend, I got that same issue everyone else is having here. I contacted Eurocom support over the weekend and still no answer from them (although it's only Monday morning now, didn't expect them to answer me right away over the weekend). I would prefer waiting for an "official" BIOS fix from them.
But in the event that this issue lingers for too long without an official fix, can I use Prema's BIOS safely? Is there something I can deactivate in the BIOS in the meantime that would make it work until an official fix is available, or is this pretty much the only way to fix this issue? It's not overly dramatic for me right now as I use my PC mostly for entertainment purposes and sometimes for work (and everything's seems to work ok except Office 2016), so if we know a fix is in the works from "official" channels, then I can probably wait for it. But... do we actually know if such a fix is currently in the works? It is pretty incredible that a guy like Prema can fix this up so quickly while "official" channels don't seem to have a fix yet.
Is Prema's fix working for all models of P650SE? I know I need the right one depending on the GPU - 970M or 980M, but is there anything that makes some models different than others or pretty much all P650SE use the same innards, boards and BIOS, regardless of brand?
Sorry if this sounds like a noob question, but this is my first gaming laptop, bought as a replacement for my aging (5+ years) desktop. I used to build my desktop systems myself, and I wanted a laptop closer to that desktop builder mentality, and I then discovered these CLEVO-based laptops and Eurocom really had the best deals for me, considering that I live in Canada and their Canadian prices were very good compared to the competition. Anyway, just wanted to know if this Prema BIOS fix was safe for me to use, if support from Eurocom don't have anything for me right now... -
@Realnoize - I was sure that I posted an update about this in the thread but this was indeed resolved a while ago. Can't speak for different Prema versions but stock BIOS 1.05.04 has reportedly fixed the issue.

Thanks XMG. So I guess I'll wait for an answer from Eurocom support then. Because if other sellers of CLEVO-based laptops have a BIOS upgrade available, I guess Eurocom probably will too. I got Stellar service from them pre-sale and when purchasing. Let's just see if that stellar experience carries over to after-sale service....
I bought my Eurocom M5-Pro this mid-october, and Eurocom gave me a free upgrade to the 5700HQ from the 4720HQ I bought. It was assembled to my specs on October 19, so maybe at that time, Eurocom didn't have the latest BIOS update on their boards...
Anyway, I guess I'll know more about this over the next couple of days. Eurocom don't make BIOS updates available on their website. And maybe I don't look at the right place, but using the Speccy software to identify components and BIOS information on my laptop, it is mentionned that my BIOS version is 5.0.11, dated 2015-08-28. So I guess this was before the issue started popping up and so it would be ovious that my BIOS would need an update. -
@Realnoize - best place to confirm the BIOS version is on the first page of the BIOS itself - it will be something like 1.05.04 or ending .03 or .05. Anything over .04 should work ok and solve the issue
-
And sorry if this looks like a noob question (I'm new to this CLEVO-based universe), but do you know what is the difference between the P650SE and P650SE-A? I looked at Prema's website and one model is listed as the P6XXSE, and the other one P6XXSE-A. And my laptop serial contains the string "P650SEA"... Do you know if that means anything in particular or not? I think it has to do with the board using a broadwell CPU, whereas the regular P6XXSE uses a Haswell CPU. Am I right? Again, thanks for your answers. Very much appreciated. -

@XMG
Just had a look into my BIOS... I'm on 1.05.04... with EC on 1.05.02. You said that anything over .04 would be probably fine, so if I'm still on .04, it probably means that's why I get this bug. And from my BIOS screen, I see that my MB series is listed as "P65xSE-A". So it must probably mean that the "-A" is relevant to the Broadwell CPU version, as I thought earlier. This must not be new to anyone here, but like I said, I'm a noob to the CLEVO-based laptop world. lol!
Just tested Outlook 2016 again. Seems to work right up until I start deleting messages. Then, after deleting 2 or 3 messages, it hangs there for about 20 seconds, completely frozen, and then it BSOD. MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. Every time. Can play Source-based games fine though (tried Dota 2 for about 8 minutes, no BSOD. Dear Esther for about 10 minutes, no BSOD). But Outlook generate a BSOD everytime I start deleting mails from the inbox.
I got an answer from an Eurocom support tech, asking me those same questions, so I sent him a pic of my BIOS screen along with version # for both BIOS and EC... I'll see what comes out of this...
Again, thanks for the all the info and replies. It's appreciated.Last edited: Nov 30, 2015 -
I've been in contact with a tech at Eurocom, and he makes me go through the usual things, windows repair, doing a chkdsk, and so on... I sent him the bios version I'm on (1.05.04), but he doesn't seem to be aware there's a new bios (if there's one - is 1.05.04 the latest one???).... I'm kind of bummed out a bit, especially since I initially ordered a 4270HQ, and it is Eurocom who gave me a free "upgrade" to the 5700HQ. Now I wish I got what I initially ordered.
If it can easily be fixed by a BIOS update, this would be fine with me. I already reinstalled Win10 and reinstalled Office 2016 with nothing else just to be sure there's no conflict with other installed apps or drivers... And... same thing. BSODs all over the place whenever I start using Office 2016 apps. This is ridiculous. I can't live with this. I hope they send me a BIOS update that fixes this. Otherwise, what are my options? -

He is literally one of the 3 reasons why I buy only buy Clevo laptops.
1) Prema's BIOS and vBIOS mods are amazing and unlock so many features and give me full control over my hardware.
2) Clevo laptops generally make it really easy to upgrade and replace pretty much any component, which means I can repaste them easily or upgrade or swap out parts, etc.
3) Clevo laptops are a really barebones OEM experience with no bloating, no scary backdoor or certification firmware controversies and/or issues.
i7 5700 HQ issues?
