For cheap no where right now I think. You can get one for $1,129.00 through resellers.

    That's a lot of money.

I'm expecting an ES version in ebay this month. Would they also sell OEM versions in ebay?

No. It is very rare when it happens, maybe 1-2 CPUs at most.

You will not find OEM versions uber cheap for quite some time if at all. Unlike this summer with QX9300's when notebook makers were blowing out stock preparing for the CPU architecture change.

You will find the standard ES love chips on eBay soon enough, though. :) In 6-8 months, you will have the OEMs showing up at better pricing, which is what it took for the QX9300 OEMs to finally start showing up at used/decent prices.

Even then, I'm not seeing a Quad Core Extreme i7 mobile chip past the 920xm on Intel's roadmap anytime soon either.

You want the best; you pay for the best.....or you pull a Soviet and get the hookup. ;)

If you're willing to pay retail, there are numerous sellers online who have them in stock.

Oh ok. What difference is there between the ES and OEM versions anyway? AFAIK, OEM versions are just CPU without the fancy Retail boxing just like other computer components.

ES or Engineering Samples are like pre-release demos, for industry specialists to mess around with a test out. Not neccessarily what the final product will precisly built as (though it's VERY close to it) but they tend to have unlocked multipliers so they can be tested in everyway. And, I think these are sent out to professionals freely so the original seller makes heaps.

OEMs are normally chips sent out in pre-built machines. Because of this they don't come with the retail packaging (you are correct). They are the the finished/final version.

Soviet, you'll have to do a list of hyperlinks to all your explanations, so we can all just throw them out and save ourselves some time in future.

I'll readily admit I'm a huge fan of ES chips. If you dot your i's and cross your t's....well that spells, "it," and that isn't much help, now is it?

Anywho....as long as you make sure to get a QS sample, you can save a bundle. If I am saving 400-500$, I couldn't possibly care less if it is an ES chip or not. I've used 'em for years and when the price tickles muh fancy, I'll use 'em again.
