Correct me if I am wrong but it sounds the heat on the underside of this machine would pose some serious burn risk if used like a traditional laptop.

So for all you owners out there do you actually use it on the couch or in bed, or is the NP8660/M860TU a portable desktop?

According to the first batch of guinea pigs, the laptop can be used on ones lap without searing flesh. Isn't that great?

LOL M860TU is a laptop, you can set it on couch or in bed if you want, just don't expect to play games while you are doing it.

Or you can always buy a notebook cooler and put under the laptop. NP8660 is both a notebook laptop it is also a portable desktop, you can use it anyway you like, because it got both the portability and the power.

I've seen both names interchanged. When you think about it, it doesn't really look like a notebook, unless you hold it on its side with the lid and the base in opposite hands, which seems even more out of line with its manufactured purpose. Maybe portable computer is the better name, but the one no one will use because it has too many syllables.

All word usage aside, I have my PowerPro G 3:8 in my lap now and it doesn't seem to be cooking me alive. As long as I don't put my leg over the outtake vent it usually stays pretty cool. Still, if you're going to play a 3D game for a couple of hours, you'd probably be better putting it on a table or a desk. Not even because of the heat alone, but because of the comfort issues with trying to play a twitch 3D game in your lap.

Might not be cooking you alive, but when you can't have kids in a few years because of sterility and cancer down there, i bet you'll be like. "****"

I have the laptop on my legs, not on my nether regions, and on my shorts, not my bare legs. I've been using laptops this way for seven years now without developing EAI or any other odd skin problems. I move the laptop periodically, and I don't rely on it to warm me up. Whenever it becomes remotely uncomfortable I move it completely off myself. Those are real risk factors for sure, but I'm not particularly worried. I'd be more concerned about my CRT irradiating me right in the face or the chemicals in plastic water bottles before I get paranoid about the laptop giving me skin cancer or making me sterile.

Your testicles are out side of your groin for a reason, the sperms won't survive long under high temperature, that's why people take really hot bath can have fertility issues.

    This is one funny thread!

Placing this puppy on your lap sure beats having a vasectomy for those who do not want to breed. Why have kids when having the latest technology is way better.

Just to destroy this myth: putting a notebook on your lap will not cause permanent fertility issues!!
Sperm takes about 6 months to produce and grow into... uh... sperm that can do the job :p That means that if I put my laptop on my lap, and it is REALLY hot for a long time, then the development of my sperm AND the ones who are in development AND the ones just developed will be handicapped. Think Hiroshima :p Sperm cells with bad DNA, with two or more tails (saw this in biology: wasn't pretty).
But the sperm that is created tomorrow won't have problems because of the high temperature, since it's history for them. Still, your sperm won't be optimal for another 6 months. After that, you're cool again... providing you don't use the laptop on your lap in the meantime! :)

Okay, so my impression from current owners is that the CLEVO M860TU is comfortable to use on your lap in bed or on the couch as long as its not for gaming...

benco, it may be "ok" in terms of comfort, but remember that you are seriously clogging the vent holes on the bottem by putting it on the soft surfaces.

This isnt good for ANY laptop.
you may be ok though when just web-browsing and such, but as gophn has stated, its not the best thing to do with any laptop.

my brother uses his macbook pro in very strange positions.. and in bed and all over the place really...

i guess that sort of ease of use is just not possible with the M860TU?..

for example he plays BF2 with the laptop on his bed.. with no heat issues 0_0

at the end of the day the laptops going to shut down before it dies from over heating..

only way u can kill hardware with heat is if its like heatsink falls or fan dies.. in my experence.. bioss have looked after hardware for more than a decade lol so im going to risk it.

Easy way to settle down the discussion is to read the topic, and I would have to say no, the M860TU isn't a "laptop" it's a "Desktop Replacement" cause it has the capability to outperform a lame desktop.

On a side note, if you wanted to conceive children after using this computer directly on top of your lap/groin for a few months, don't be surprised if you would have to wait six months for "regrowth".

Another side note: in this day in age it's worth it to take advice on preventing cancer with all the toxins and chemicals that surround society today. -I can personally vouch for this as I've recently completed all of my chemotherapy / stem cell transplant and though it was challenging, it was not "fun and games". :D

Some word of advice for those of you who do find yourself in the category that I just came out of is: No matter what, remain optimistic and always think of serving others, it will drastically improve your fight against dis-ease.

What they "do" is take your own stem cells or a donors and give them back to you, it's been a medical practice for about a decade.

    Thanks AlyH!
