in anticipation of my new 8130 laptop.... last night I borrowed my bro's "p150HMx i think?" that he bought late last year.

It has the i5-2430, 8gb ram, and gtx560m, 500gb monumentus. Looks real nice, good speaker, nice screen....but I have a complaint.

I like using my laptop with it literally in my lap while I'm laid up chillin. I cranked up a few games and damn this thing got hot! Not burn me hot, but very uncomfortable hot.

I assume I'm going to have the same problem with mine? Do I need grab a cooler or something off newegg?

Post screen shots of temperatures please. What you think is hot might be warm for someone else.

I wouldn't recommend gaming on your lap, a flat surface is needed to cool adequately.

is there a temp program i should run or something to find out?

and yeah I understand it cools better on a flat surface, but its just more comfortable for me in my lap.

i may look at getting something like that Cooler Master Notepal U2.....seems popular for the 8130 and it wont break the bank.

I want something simple that I can just lay on my lap when I'm on the couch or in bed.

    ,

edit: then again, the Targus Lap Chill looks like it would be even more comfortable on the lap/bed

Many here on the forum are using the program in the link below called HWMonitor.

CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

Also please make very sure that the vents on your machine are 'breathing good' with no obstruction.

Propping up the rear of the machine a little can help too. :)

As others have pointed out, your lap is not the best place for it. The vent intakes are on the bottom of the machine and are easily covered. If you accidentally block them, temps will shoot up and it may get uncomfortably warm on the bottom. The exhausts are on the rear of the machine, so they should be kept clear as well.

Well, most laptops are like that (Alienware included). The ASUS G-series are exceptions, though they are insanely huge so they better do something better with that bulk.

Just put your laptop at the inside of your thighs, and youll see temps lower than using it on a flat surface. If you sit like a girl, youll block the vents. The air-intake for GPU and CPU fan are at the sides underneath. If you prevent your thighs from blocking them, you are good to go.

Ive gamed for hours like this, and it doesnt get uncomfortable hot. Only a little hot on the left side from underneath the USB ports.

Good idea on the cooler. Last thing Clevo needs is a law suit for burnt legs :D

"Most" people don't get a Sager to put on their lap, a lot use it for CPU and GPU intensive tasks.

The heat produced by high end models is one of the reason the industy has gotten away from the word "laptop" and use "notebook" more often now

my temps are 61 cpu and 71 gpu while gaming Just Cause 2 for 20 mins on max settings.

Not too bad eh?....it's just alot higher than my old laptop. so Im not used to it yet I guess.

I'll probably still get the Targus or U2 cooler

Those temps are really good. I wouldn't bother with a cooler, except as a flat surface to sit the notebook on. The actual cooling isn't needed for the temps you're reporting.

I have a sanded down plywood cutout for my np8170 that is just a little bigger than the computer itself... works great for 'lap-top' gaming
