For quite a while I had a Sager 9262. The x7200 does not sound any louder at all either while idle or under load.

    I disagree 100%.

I just moved from a 9262 when my 7200 arrived.

Under Idle the 7200 is very quiet. When the fans are full they are louder than the 9262. Louder and more high pitched. The fans also spin up more often on the 7200.

do you still have your 9262? if so can you check to see if the gpu fans are louder or is it just the cpu fan or both?

i had the X7200 for few hours and the noise levels are acceptable it is loud but the kind of noise clevo fans do is not like the leaf blower on the Alienware M17X

now comparing the D900f and the X7200 there is a difference for the extra fan i don't know about the D900 with SLI because i never own one :)

It is hard to tell which fans are making the noise. When you Fn + 1 it turns all fans to max. Then the 7200 is as loud as a desktop.

For everyday work when the fans are low, the noise is a slight hum.

When gaming the noise is noticeable but not as loud as the Fn + 1 full fan.

My x7200 is NOT as loud under load as my desktop at all. Are you sure you do not have a defect of some sort?

I didn't say under load. With the fans at full it is as loud as a desktop. I have never heard the fans at full unless I forced them to full with Fn + 1

Fans at max are loud, buy nowhere near desktop level, it is very acceptable

Perhaps I should clarify again. Also, my posts seem needlessly combative. That was not my intention.

The last time that I used a gaming desktop was around 5 years ago. I am comparing the sound of the 7200 with fans on full to the noise that desktop would make. That was a mini tower with a 120mm fan in front and a power supply 120mm fan.

I am not saying the 7200 is excessive but I when the fans are on full I can hear them from another room in a relatively quiet house.

Hahaha! I can hear my M17X from another room with 2 doors closed in between with a lot of background noise! :p :D
    You're fine! ;)

what i am tryign to discover is if the x7200 is indeed louder than the d900c and by how much because the d900c, for the power it packed back in 2008, was an extremely quiet laptop and gaming system in general. so in a way it spoiled me and at the same time inspired me to build a desktop with the power of an overclocked gtx 480 and the silence of the D900C.

i quickly thought about going back to laptops with the x7200 upgrade but if it is indeed louder than D900C then it is not worth it as silence is paramount for me.

^^^^Understood. The only way to really find out for sure is to test them out side by side I suppose. At any rate, I was totally surprised and impressed by how quiet this beast is. When you look under the "hood" and see those 4 large fans you would think it would be much louder than it is... :)

Is there anyway of getting rid of that covered up chipset fan opening? Why is it covered I wonder, there is a huge fan starved of air under it

I checked on this, it is not a seller or reseller thing. Clevo the manufacturer has determined that this covered opening is important for the overall chassis cooling, and should not be removed by the user. No more details were given.

Isn't that blocked to cool cpu better? Or is it blocked in the case of only one gpu?

is that covered fan grill a 100% flat surface that covers it completely or is it a meshed opening? if it's 100% flat then it might be the reason for this laptop bieng louder than since the fan is being sufficated for air and causing resonance, assuming there is a fan in that location like the D900C.

also, the cpu and gpu's in x7200 are significantly higher tdu. if the same fans are used as in d900c the temps would be higher but the noise levels the same. if they are using higher rpm fans then the noise levels would be significantly louder and that is what i fear.

I generally trust the engineers that design the heat transfer systems for high end laptops. If they covered that opening I can almost guarantee it was for a good reason. I would say open it up at your own peril.

I have removed my back covers from D901C. As a result all my temps dropped. Unfortunately removing the plates made it noisier since the plates were also stopping some noise.

And it is indeed cooler with the back cover removed  It makes no sence to starve it of air
