m.2 ssd...

sup guys. been awhile. i should probably be asking this in the storage thread but wanted to start here first since there some confusion on the m.2 slots in the sager np9772 (i think that's the model, clevo 770zm for sure though). i have a samsung sm951 256GB in there now. i tried to keep it light as the OS drive, and went through it with coarse tooth comb this week. i just can't delete enough and have to get a bigger drive. i am in the market for a m.2 2280, but it has to be MLC. i won't do TLC for my OS drive. i just won't. i do have an 850 evo as a secondary drive but sadly it really hasn't been used and i forgot if it was MLC or TLC, but it's purpose never really got utilized.

i've done enough research to know prices are kind of high for stuff like storage and ram right now so the prices are baffling. i'd really like a 1TB drive but i don't think that will happen with prices at a peak right now. the hard part is verifying that some drives are MLC. TLC has been mostly obvious. i'm partial to samsung but definitely willing to consider crucial/micron and intel. speeds aren't the highest priority but i'd rather not take major hit in performance. reliability is more important. i am kind of hesitant with crucial because i bought 2 at an excellent price a couple of years ago and one was definitely a dud and the other did not play nice with my sager. but those were sata 2.5" drives and i ended up getting 850 pro's 512GB for my redundant in laptop backups. anyways, back to m.2. what are the good value m.2's currently? ocz, plextor and toshiba are absolutely not a consideration. i know about the history of OCZ, not comfortable with plextor and toshiba, just no. hell no. the samsung 960 pros are really more than i'd like to pay. and is nvme an option or would i still have to jump through hoops?

 

If you have the prema BIOS then NVME drives should be plug and play. The SM961 in that case is an option.
