I was wondlering if anyone here has tried using a mini pci-e ssd in the M570etu. According to sagers website the chassis has 3x mini pci-e one meant for wireless and the other two for intel turbo memory and tv tuner. Heres one of the ssd's i was thinking of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609352.

Not only speed but also more storage space. The one i linked was just the first one i found.

They are too expensive right now for too little storage space...

It should fit, question is if it will work or not. And if it works will it be bootable or not.

I think 149 for 64GB is pretty reasonable, considering that it is after all a SSD.

EDIT: Maybe it's not worth it after all. 90MB/s read and 55MB/s write isn't exactly great...

yeah but its still storage that I didn't have before, and it would be plenty fast enough for my to dump my music and movies onto so that there is more space on my wd black edition.

I wonder if you could buy 2 of these, and RAID them. use the TV slot and the Turbo Memory slot.

I am unsure if the M570 has a raid controller on it though, so would probably have to use some sort of software raid (like windows dynamic disks)

You probably could, but maybe with the same money you could buy a 128 GB SSD and spare the trouble.

Not really, after all we only have the one hdd slot, but a few of us still have open mini pci-e slots.

I'll buy one if and when they release a 128GB version with higher read/write...maybe upwards of 200MB/s

Well its time to breath a little life into this old thread. I have managed to score a cheap 4gb ssd from ebay. So once it arrives I will be able to pop it in and give it a test run. Hopefully it will boot nicely and then I can pick up a nice 64gb one and have a nice performance boost. Once it arrives I will post a update.

I heard samsung has started making mini-pcie SSDs. They've released 16, 32 and 64GB so far I think it was. Reading was 200mb/s and writing was 100mb/s.

I'd like to see if it does work because I'm looking to pick up a 64GB Supertalent mini-pcie SSD for £170 for my M860TU. Its rated at 150MB/sec for reads and 100MB/sec for writes. If it can be used as a OS drive it would be a nice boost and not too expensive.

Also, if you double the storage space to 128GB the price more than doubles

I wonder if it's possible of running mini-pcie SSDs in some kind of raid setup...because I have two available mini pcie slots in my M570etu...

Okay then...maybe when Samsung releases mini pcie SSDs, they will actually work with all laptops. I hate this exlusive bull. There is no reason behind it. I will never, ever buy a supertalent product, I am that pissed off just now.

The one i am testing is from a dell vostro a10? netbook. I picked it up as a refurb from a reputable seller on ebay for ten bucks. It could just be that this one doesn't interface with the chassis, it does use a pata type controller and its possible the chassis doesnt know what to do with it. Next step is to try to track down a cheap sata type controller one and give it a whirl.

If you look at the specs for the laptop/mini pcie, they're actually combined pcie/usb connectors. Depending on laptop/maunfacturer/connector, some are not fully wired and may only be usb OR pcie, and not both, hence not working with all devices. Have you tried a different slot? Otherwise look at the service manual (in my sig) to see if it shows which are fully wired.

Edit: Looks like they are all fully wired in the M570TU (the M570RU's WLAN board didn't have the USB wired) thought the WLAN slot seems to have some clock resistors shorted. Page 93 of the service manual if you're interested.

WOrth comparing the systems mini pci-e slot against the netbook pci-e slot that has sata, pata and usb pins. This is the ASUS netbook's slot (flash_con):

Hmm, I think it looks good, but I will have to get a friend whose a electronics and circuit board guru to look things over on them and see what he thinks. Who knows maybe I did get a bad ssd. Wouldn't be the first time someone has sold a bad techno goodie on ebay.

Okay, so I was looking through the intel storage matrix controller and I think I found the problem. It lists one internal sata connection as unused. Now the ssd I have uses a pata interface. So its probably a pretty good bet that I need to try a different ssd. It only listed one open internal interface so if I do happen to be right I think its a safe bet that the tv tuner slot will probably not work.

i would highly recommend u a SATA SSD, this one u mentioned is 2 slow, u can purchase a SSD from G.skill for 128GB at read 100MB/s and write 70MB/s. But it is only 220usd. Or u can choose the newest generation 128GB SSD from G.skill. An unimaginable speed at read 240MB/s and write 170MB/s. this will be 350USD

The goal of having a PCI-E SSD is to have a backup and/or secondary boot drive while the main SATA slot would be occupied by the HDD. This would be quite valuable for M570TU users as our machines can only accomodate one HDD or SDD. We would be able to use the mini SSD as the primary drive while the HDD would be used for storage.

yeah, only one SATA slot for hard drive is boring, however, using a mini-pci SDD as your primary system drive is too slow, even much slower than HDD. So i wonder one SATA SSD and one eSATA HDD can be the best choice. Just now I'm using a X25-m 80GB SSD as my primary system driver, a Hitach 320GB 7200 as secondary driver. So fast that i get a 6.9 overall grade in win7,
even this is determined by GPU--the slowest part

I see. I just took a peek at the datasheets for these mini SSD's and they seem to be turtles afterall. It seems that the only purpose now for these SDD's would be as a second string.

Some of the mini pci-e drives are rated a sata1 speed specs so they wouldnt be too bad. But it may be a good idea to just wait a little while and see if some better drives come along.
