    Hi,

Just received my new P650SG. Like it so far, however have been experiencing some recurring issues...

    1) Every time I boot up the laptop, the keyboard lights up. Is there a way to turn this off permanently?

    2) After every 5 minutes or so, the fans rev up, and at other times when i'm doing basic net surfing or word processing, the fans seem to be spinning at higher speeds than I think they should...like revving a car. Is there a way to get around this?

Using the latest stock BIOS settings 1.03.05 and EC 1.03.04

    Cheers!

1 - No. From a cold boot, the hotkey software which handles the EC hasn't loaded yet. On a reboot, it will remain off. As soon as windows loads, it should shut off if that is your preference.
2 - That's normal apparently. It doesn't happen for me that I know of, but it's possible that your temps passed a certain threshold and it's cooling them again, or that's how the system apparently works. Not sure which is which. Don't worry about it though; there's nothing that's bad about running max fans 24/7, and certainly nothing bad about a small fan speed revving. If you are really bothered by it, ask Prema about it and see if his BIOS update fixes it or something.

    1. Like D2 Ultima said: that's normal and cannot be disabled on cold boots.
    2. What you're describing sounds typical, but to be safe, use a system monitoring utility to see what your temperatures look like. As far as getting around it, you don't have much control over fan behavior.

For point 1, I think I got a little impatient and didn't notice this at first, but yes, the lights do turn off after windows loads up. For point 2, at max load while bench marking using 3dmark and such, GPU temp reached max of 80 degrees C, but stayed in mid-70's for the most. CPU went up to 82ish but came back down again very quickly as fans sped up... all in all, performance thus far looks to be in line for the most.

Thank you @D2 Ultima and @Prostar Computer

Glad you got it sorted, and if benching and stuff, max fans is good =D. 3Dmark does not make a GPU hot or a CPU hot. Trust me on that. BF4 at 120fps does a FAR worse job on a CPU, and playing Dying Light or running Unigine Valley will hold your GPU down and beat it with a hot poker until it cries "MOMMY COOL ME DOWN". But you're using a maxwell chip so it'll still be cool.

Your temps look good! Keep an eye out for BIOS and EC firmware updates; you never know when they'll alter fan behavior (hopefully more to your liking).

I'm newish to this aspect of Sager/Clevo notebooks and I see a lot of posts about custom or modified BIOS/EC updates. Is there a guide with up-to-date links to this kind of content? My search for drivers has taken me all over so far...

There aren't any guides for custom or modded firmware from resellers or OEMs, but generally the souls that work at producing that custom/modded firmware provide all the tools you need to use their progeny. You can find them here and on the tech inferno forums most frequently.
