Good catch @tanzmeister. That is really weird. I've never seen anything like that on an MXM card before.

Eurocom does have that in the video upgrade tutorial:

Prema also mentioned the 10-series need hardware mod to fire up the card (for now)

The card is wider on the left which will make the modding extensive.

Not really. It just fits. Eurocom have a video on their YouTube channel with the card installation in the P870DM-G.

EDIT : Unless you were referring the P37XSMA.

You would need to plan out the physical space, make sure it won't hit electrical parts and then modify the chassis to create room.

Currently all 1080 PCBs come with an extra power connector AFAIK.

I think there is some rumbling that MSI has a castrated low-TDP version of a 1080 planned for the same standard MXM 3.0b form factor as their 1070. This may end up being no better than the castrated version of 1070 except for more CUDA cores. If the extra power connector is omitted, I think it will be unrealistic for us to expect full performance from 1070 or 1080 because the TDP will have to be crippled in order for that to function.

As default, if you trust your mxm slots and can modify the vbios/pcb you may unlock more. At your own risk of course.

Without testing and certification going beyond the specs is up to you, most will do well beyond 100W. The question comes down to how much over and for how long.

I guess MSi is brave enough to warranty their laptops for 2 years at least.

Well we warranty our machines 2 years as standard too. However the standard operation of the system and doing an unsupported upgrade along with power throttle removal are two very different scenarios.

Indeed, our modded 980M cards are able to draw 200W from the MXM slot if we push them hard enough. However, the occasional benchmark (with AC cooling in some cases) is quite different than a steady diet of that running within stock power limits. Durability funneling everything through the MXM slot could be greatly compromised without the auxiliary power source.
I suspect the game of cat and mouse has gotten more interesting with Pascal. The goons at NVIDIA won't make it easy to upgrade older systems to Pascal because that's not in their best interests or the OEMs that need to sell laptops to stay in business. They've already gone out of their way with the acts of customer betrayal. This is only going to get worse in time. They are not our friends... it's all about NVIDIA looking out for NVIDIA. With so many stooges drinking the feces flavored BGA Kool-Aid, the road to enthusiast hell is getting wider every day. They don't even pretend to care what we think about their actions. They don't give a rat's ass.

First the Clock blocking idea, then push out vbios that locked overclocking. I expect the next idea will be lesser and lesser headroom for overclocking. Aka More and more will be locked on hardware level.

planned obsolescence points set to date of nextgen gpu release and self destruct sequence once +1mhz oc or above is detected on ANY component in the machine :D only way around: overclocking season passes! only 50 bucks a month and u can overclock to your heart's content! be aware that any hardware errors still wont be covered by warranty :D

The 1080 has been easier to overclock without a modded vbios than any other MXM card ever to be fair. A simple power mod and it's silly close to the desktop scores over long gaming sessions (without it even benchmarks get close).

So anyone other than Eurocom have put an MSI 1070 into their P870DM-G?
