Now that Throttlestop works with the i7 XM's, it's the better way to go for overclocking. Without it to adjust the TDP/TDC, your 920 is just going to throttle anyways.

If you still want it, the thread with the link is called "Advanced BIOS options" or something like that.

What is Throttlestop? is it a program to help overclock the cpu?

Depends on what you want to do. I have gone as high as 100 tdp and 75 tdc but that was while I was on an air conditioner since it gets really hot and I was just benching. For normal use I have gone as high as 75 tdp and 60 tdc, and as long as you're not going to be stressing all cores to full extent, the normal cooling should be fine, otherwise you need cold air... it gets really hot.

For example, yesterday, I got the cpu to 2.8 GHz on all cores and it was at 86C on normal cooling. I could have gone higher but it was getting to the point where it was uncomfortably hot.

Well I've just try and the computer shut down at 75/55 with 26/25/19/19... seem bad. 28/27/21/21 give me a BSOD with memory managment error at startup if I OC on the bios. You think my W870cu is bad at OC ? cpu never go pass 76'c

What power adapter are you using? The 920xm is quite power hungry, especially if you want to OC, the 160w or 180w is almost a necessity if you're going to OC.

    yep I got the 160w

edit: do you know some test I could try to see if my system is just a bad overclocker ? it's pretty wierd that it crash at low temp like that. Maybe the ram is a problem ?

@BaronGalf - The 8760's do pretty well. Here is a recent wPrime32M (v1.55) run on mine (for reference purposes, 11.1 seconds is about normal for a stock 920XM):

That run was made at 26-26-26-26 with TDP set to 90W in Throttlestop, so all 4 cores (8 threads) were running at 3.467Ghz. It do get hot.

wPrime v1.55 is a good benchmark to test CPU performance under a variety of settings and power schemes. The 32M test is very fast, so you get immediate feedback, and temps are not an issue.

I would test with all the multipliers at the same rank. (ie. 22/22/22/22) It's easier to run stability tests. Just move it up slowly, and test.

I've run a speed test with all stock in wPrime 1.55 and got 40,231 seconde... ... so it's normal ?

Edit: sorry I was running in 1 thread.. got 12 seconde at stock with 8 thread

That's a little slow. I usually see 11.1-11.2 seconds at stock settings (24-23-17-17) for the 920XM. Just ran this:

What were the max temps you were getting at this setting?

If I recall, after a number of runs building up to that final one, temps edged into the low 80's for the 26x test, but remember that the tests are very short bursts of intense processing activity, and the temps go from 50C +/- to 80C +/- in seconds. No telling where temps go over any sustained period without supplementary cooling. Too high for me.

I would love to see some power usage numbers for hyperthreading, on vs off. Seeing as these CPU's clock better with it off and pull less power, I wonder if 4 cores @ 3.33 still uses less power than 8 cores @ 3.0.

I may have to be the one testing this myself, but I wouldn't have an extreme for at least another month or two, and I also can't find a 220v kill-a-watt.

If someone else with a 920/940 would do this, it'd be awesome.

Ran 3dMark06 with multipliers at 26x across the board with power at 85W/77A to check CPU temps, which were in the mid-80C's with spikes on two cores to a max of 91*C. Although well within the 920XM's thermal parameters, those temps are outside my comfort zone for extended use, but the performance is there if you want it.
