Hi, I was recently told by Sager that the FX3700M would not run in the M860TU due to what I assume is the 75W power consumption and the resulting heat issues. My question is, why can the GeForce 260M GTX (which also consumes 75W from what I've read) run in my laptop but not the Quadro FX3700M? I've read that quite a few people are upgrading to the 260M GTX with 15.4" laptops, but are there common instances of heat issues?

    Thanks
    -Eric

The GTX 260M should run fine.

    Because 3700M is 65nm with 128SP, 260M is 55nm with 112SP.

Ah, I seem to have missed that spec. I also see that the FX2700M is listed as 65nm, why then was that card listed as an option for M860TU users?

EDIT: Call me crazy, but does your signature say you have a FX3700M 1G running in your M860TU? Did you not just tell me that wasn't possible? lol

2700M only has 48SP, so much cooler than 128SP. I didn´t say it´s impossible, just a little hot, you´d better get a NB cooler, or the single fan will drive you mad, especially when you also have a hotter CPU there......

Major difference between what will run vs what they will support. You need to rephrase your question if you want that question answered.

I basically want to know if it will run/last. I don't want to put something in there that's going to cause catastrophic failure :). If I put the 3700 in there, would I need to keep an eye on it every second of the day to make sure it doesn't overheat, or is it more of a just keep an eye on it if you plan on playing a game etc?

The GTX 280m is a better and safer option for gaming, if that is what you want to do. The real issue though is power consumption... if you have a quad core CPU, and the GTX 280m, the computer may shut down while on battery (specially when gaming). Undervolting may definitely be needed...

There's also the extra heat to worry about.

hi guys, funny i havent been to this section. me and prada both bought these cards and i was the one who said it might not work.

prada, to be honest, i was going by the fact that h-emmanuel has a 160 watt adapter. that and the fx3700 and gtx280 are very similar cards. i had just read his first post on his thread about it and not done a whole lot of research.

i thought you had tried it in your notebook and it simply didnt start.

i dont have an adapter yet. HOW could a bigger adapter possibly effect performance, if the smaller one works? i mean, i know the adapter will get hotter...

It will start, even with a 120W PSU. Of course 160W is better.
PS: niff, we have similar system setup. :D

Nope, just trying to get ahead of the game in case it doesn't work. It seems as though it will though. Now it's time to decide if I want to keep the FX3700M or sell it and buy a new 260M GTX.

    Considering I have a dual-core P series processor that uses 25W, I think I'll be safe.

Kaltmond, have you tried gaming at all with your Quadro? Also, is a bios update going to be needed to run this card?

I'm just worried that this thing is gonna burn up if I try to do anything other than browsing the internet with it.
