Hello. I just revived my good old clevo rig using this guide. But as I've read, this method only works for a while, so I'm looking for a more reliable gpu for this rig. Is it true that the 260m gtx is more reliable, and if so, is it possible to use any 260m gtx cards (like from an alienware laptop)?

The 260m should be more reliable, but you need a rare type of 260m. It has to be MXM 2.1.

    Not MXM 3.0.

And not the asus backwards MXM 2.1.

    These cards are very rare.

Cheaper option would be to get an FX 3600m or FX 3700m or maybe even an ATI 4870 (for just over $200).

The ATI 4870/4850/3870 would be reliable, but I cant tell you if you will need to modify your heatsink for those to fit or not. And I also cant be sure about bios support for ATI cards in your clevo.

Remember to stick to MXM 2.1 type III or type HE cards.
Do not get an MXM 3.0 card. And watch out for asus 260m GPUs, those wont fit.

    An asus 4870 might work.

Ok, so I found the FX 3700m for 200$ and the FX 3600m for 150$ on ebay(I'll avoid ATI because of the possible BIOS and heatsink issues). How will these cards perform in games? As I understand, these cards are made for CAD tasks and not for games.

Brand shouldn't matter, only the form factor and the firmware version/type. If HP/Dell/Lenovo use a custom firmware you might want to use their drivers...but generally you should be fine.

Yes I know of many Dell/Alienware users that have put a clevo brand GPU in with no problems as well :)
