Hey guys, I've been reading on here pretty religiously past couple days trying to figure out how to build out a clevo.

    on hidevolution for the P650,

    7820hk cpu
    16gb 2400mhz ram
    1080p 120hz 15.3 monitor
one of the HID approved 256 ssd's

    few questions....

    1) is it worth spending the extra $ for the 2666mhz ram? Will that really affect me that much?

    2) Is it worth spending $100 to have HID pick a "top 20%" monitor to reduce backlight bleeding? Has anyone done that and can recommend either way?

    3) Will I notice a difference in daily life with a sata ssd that is a no name from HID? I see the PCIe NVMe smoking ssd's but just not sure what applications I'd have to use to take advantage of that kind of read/write speed and bandwidth capability.

    4) overall, do people still recommend the HID clevo P650hs-g?

    Thanks guys

    1. not really, how much extra is it? I wonder what the timings are for it.

    2. The stock 1080p 60Hz panel I would say yes. I'm not sure about the others, the 4K GSync and 120Hz ones don't have the same reputation for backlight bleed afaik.

    3. No, pcie vs sata you can't even really feel a difference. It's only if you got a really garbage sata ssd, I hope HID doesn't carry those.

    4. Yes.

    1) likely no, I never recommend purchasing higher frequency RAM as it never really seems to be worth it
    2) likely yes, you want your panel to be as good as possible because you will be spending most of your time on your laptop looking at it
    3) likely no, I would not say it is worth it unless you know you need it
    4) likely yes

    1) You're not likely to notice much of a difference between this and the standard 2400 MHz RAM. Use the money you'd spend on this to upgrade your storage, either at point of purchase or in the aftermarket.
    2) If you're like me and will have your system connected to an external monitor most of the time, then no. Even still, I'm probably in the minority here, but backlight bleed doesn't bother me unless it's really egregious. Most of the time, you're only going to see it if you're looking at a pure black background, and how many of us spend time staring at one of those? At the same time, if you want the peace of mind, then it's probably worth the extra scratch.
    3) The "HID approved" SSD is probably an OEM Samsung unit. They're pretty much identical to their retail counterparts, just sold under a different name and without the usual warranty coverage - any issues would need to be handled by the system integrator. You need not worry about getting some off-brand product. And for day to day use, a standard SATA SSD is plenty. One thing to note about the P6XXHS is that it comes with 2 M.2 slots, both of which can be used for storage as long as the drives are SATA. Using NVMe in its designated slot precludes the second M.2 from being used for another drive.
    4) I own the 17-inch version of this machine's predecessor, the P670RS, which is the same thing only with a Skylake CPU. It's a great system - very powerful for its size yet is surprisingly cool and quiet.

    1) Depends on how much $$, but in short, it makes for a somewhat negligible difference in overall performance.
    2) "Top 20%" are still likely to have a little bleeding (probably very small). That said, it's up to you and your wallet.
    3) Depends on your application/usage. In the most common scenarios, the difference isn't appreciable.
    4) It's a good system and a respectable seller.

Thanks guys for the feedback!! I ended up pulling the trigger and purchasing it. I did go with the 120hz display and stuck to the 2400 ram, and spent the extra $$ on a bigger SSD. I spoke with @Donald@HIDevolution and he gave me good feedback on their HID approved drives, sounds very reputable and on the up and up. I can't wait to get it! My first enthusiast laptop!

The bigger SSD was probably the better choice, especially if you were starting at a smaller capacity.
