Looking for a notebook to record audio, TI firewire chipset is a must!!
860tu is going back because it doesn't, it has a jmicron s***set instead and will not work with rme ff800 or t.c. electronic audio card. Help, my fujitsu just died and driving around with my pc is not very good for it(or my backside)

This should go in the "What Notebook Should I Buy?" section, fill out a faq and you'll get more responses than from just the Sager forum.

Sorry about the M860TU not working out for you, guess we weren't much help in the M860TU Owner's Lounge.

why not just get a cheap TI-chipset firewire Expresscard?

Mainly the D900 series of Clevo notebooks will have the TI firewire chipset... which I have been using with my M-Audio FW1814. :)

Thanks insaneXIII, I will look into that.
Hi Gophn, I have tried 2 firewire expresscards with TI chipset but it doesn't work. I'v even disabled all that is called jmicron and the 1394 controller is mentioned as TI, but it still won't work. I guess you are lucky with your TI-chipset fore firewire because most notebooks don't have it anymore.
I've read in another thread that you are recommending the use of a firewire expresscard for laptops with other than TI-chipsets, but after reading alot of forums about the problems mac and dell are having with firewire audio cards I'm not so sure that is the solution(please, don't take this the wrong way!, I'm only trying to help people who might be in the same position that I am).

Are you using XP or Vista.... XP works best for DAW's.... I know a couple of people with that notebook doing audio work with external firewire soundacrds... seems fine for them.

Hi again Gophn, XP ,don't trust Vista yet :D Do you know the brand of their audio cards?

Edit: I get cracks and pops all over the place, tried all buffers and latency settings with no result.

the circle of people around use similar equipment... so like myself, they are using M-Audio equipment.

    I own two M-Audio cards:
    - M-Audio Transit (very portable, and pretty good for USB)
    - M-Audio FW1814 (the best card that could do pretty much everything for an audiophile... just bulky)

I think they are using M-Audio Firewire Solo's or 410's.

I have a question for you: do you know if clevo did change the firewire chipset with the 860tu, it might have been TI???
I'm running an rme ff800 on a fujitsu amilo Pi 1536 with TI-chipset for 2 years now, but it is about to die

You know.... I think the M860TU is using a TI OHCI-konformer IEEE 1394 controller (from what my friend tells me).... I recommend to contact a vendor to confirm before purchasing.

You live next to a great vendor... www.xxodd.nl

    contact them about the specifics.

its the same for all M860TU's the same.... so I guess it is a jmicron chipset if you have confirmed it.

    I told him that already.

The Clevo D900 series has been known to use firewire TI chipsets.

... but a D900 might be too large for the OP.

I think you would like a higher res moniter. Because for me it is easier to find little sound bits in the recording.

Well, my eyes are not as good as they used to be. Any thoughts on the specs?

Sorry, missed your edit. I've got a 19" monitor for mixing at home.

ps:you're one of the lucky dell-owners without any firewire problems?
