Yesterday, I used my laptop almost 8 hours working on Microsoft office programs. Once, I was done, I turned the computer off with a slight press of the start button. Windows Vista cycled through the normal screens to shut off. An hour or so later, when I turned the laptop on, it would reach the screen where the green bar moves at the bottom. Safe mode was not working and gave me the same issue. I had to use my Vista cd to repair windows and then it started to work fine. I was given the message during the repair that there were bad sectors on the HDD. How is this possible in a new laptop? Is there any other reason this could have happened?
Is there any way to diagnose to see if all my hardware is working fine?
Is there any way to look for bad sectors on the HDD and repair?
Thanks for the help.

I haven't experienced this ever with my 5797, bad sectors I've had on old hd's when I was too lazy to wait for my computer to shutdown.
And also on a iriver mp3 player which I dropped multiple times and it began to make a ticking sound.

I've used hdd regenerator in the past to fix what was broken -
