is there something about the 6110's board that prevents using a gt 650m with *gddr5 memory?

    The gddr3 is soldered on.

Other then that it seems to be a sacrifice they made to stay under 90w of power draw as when the CPU is upgraded to a 45w model instead of the ODM versions 35W model the power supply can no longer provide enough juice to run the CPU+GPU at 100% and still charge the battery.

GDDR5 is much more power hungry then GDDR3 and would have likely forced them to go to a larger size power brick that their market research likely said portable gamers(who are the ones buying a 11.6 instead of 15.6 laptop) would not like to have to carry around.

i think the combo of extra heat generated plus requiring a larger brick to match an ultrabook has more than a little bit to do with it. makes the most sense because the 650m with gddr5 is available in more robust models.
