I have a NP8130 laptop and I might get an SSD for my laptop.

Are there any guides for this upgrade? I might get 256 GB or 128GB SSD.

I searched some and ppl posted that I should use the NEW SSD on primary and use the HDD that came with the laptop on a CD thing? How would i do that?

And, how do i transfer stuff to the SSD like games and OS?

    Thank you.

To mount the HDD into the optical bay you need to get a caddy. You want a 12.7mm SATA connection but any brand should work. The bezel on the CD ROM should pop off and you can put it on the caddy.

To install the OS you'll want to do a clean install of Windows and all programs and games. Cloning the HDD to the SSD may work but you may also have some errors so to prevent some headache its best to just do that clean install.

Can the 8130 fit an mSata drive in?

If it can, I can at least tell you that the Adata SX300 128GB I got is working very nicely, easy to upgrade the firmware as well.

Definitely do a clean install... Windows optimizes itself for the type of hard drive its on when it sets up

Is there a Video Guide for this?

I searched some 12.7mm SATA caddy but some are so $60 and some are $11... Why is that?

Also, after you put HDD in the optical bay, I can't use CD ROM right?

Also, What happens to the OS in the HDD if I do a clean install of windows and all in the SSD?

I would get rid of the OS off your HDD before, because I believe Windows will then create a dual boot scenario. I would get your data you want off it, and format that drive (the OS partition, anyways).

I would find out if the 8130 can hold an mSata drive, then you don't have to around with a caddy, and you can keep your DVD drive.

    I dont think there is a m-sata for NP8130.

How would i install the OS to my SSD? Would i first take the HDD out from the primary and put SSD in primary and install OS w/ the CD ROM?

Then after installing the OS with the CD-ROM, would I take the optical bay off then put the 12.7mm in the optical bay and put the HDD?

I guess thats how you do the process?

How do i format the HDD? Is there a program? I dont need anything from the HDD. Do I do that before putting it in the optical bay?

You are making this way too complicated. Here's how you do it:

    1. Put any combination of HDD, SSD, DVD/Bluray you want into the machine.
2a. If you have optical drive, boot from install disc.
2b. If you don't have optical drive, use an external one OR put the OS on an USB drive
    3. Start installling the OS, you can format using the built in format tool any OS has.
    4. Finish OS install, use the computer

If you want to keep your current install of OS, you need a migration software like Acronis TrueImage, Norton Ghost, or the bundled migration software many SSD comes with(Samsung etc). Keep both the SSD and the HDD in the machine and have it copy the stuff over from the HDD to the SSD. I personally recommend just starting fresh.

You can do a clean install with the SSD in the primary. You can also clone your existing installation if you prefer by using said software (Acronis TrueImage, Norton Ghost, etc.). To do the latter, you'll need both drives installed - the HDD in the primary slot, and the SSD connected either via a USB adapter (externally), or installed in the ODD bay with a caddy.

If you go the clean install route, then basically, yes. Your laptop is designed a bit differently, but that's more or less the meat and potatoes of how to upgrade and keep your existing HDD.

You can format it using Windows; either during your install process, or after installing Windows to the SSD. If you do it after, just navigate to Disk Managment, right click on the drive, and select Format. There are free utilities out there that can do this too, but they're not necessary.
